Not the way I planned
Sessions don't always go as planned. Last night I placed the party against an overwhelming enemy forces. There were white dragons, orcs, lich-like creatures, and skeleton troops. Preparation notes stated that party is likely to be captured (and flee afterwards) or simply flee. After that they would be heading towards civilization to a town where the actual prepared adventure would await.
They were unwilling to let them self to be captured, and soon two out of three were out making death saving throws. At that point I was afraid of TPK and talking them about the option to 'Flee' and suffer a campaign loss. They decided not to flee. The last standing member, party's halfling bard, revived his comrades with magic and wit. In the end, with subtle help of the Shadow Prince and much more direct aid from the forces of the Elf Queen, they not only survived, but also kicked the combined-ass of the Orc Lord and the Lich King minions.
And then they decided not to go to the town I had an adventure awaiting, instead they decided to pay a visit to the Spider Wood Drow Community. The party is heading there now.
Not the way I planned. And also it's better that way.
Iconic relationship effects can cause the GM prep work to fall into pieces. But most of scrambling of the GM's plans always comes from the players. They are the ones to have all sorts of wild ideas. And they are the ones who make those ideas work. I told them they messed up my plans, always give credit when it is so finely deserved.
The next game is actually tomorrow. And I'll be prepared again. :)
