Last night I was watching old¹ gamechamp3k videos and there was a specific point in her rockman 3 damageless playtrough that really stuck out to me
On the surface she just made a throwaway joke about a lil dude jumping over you while you're on a ladder and then running back to doctor willy
But then the autism kicked in and I wanted to know approx how many people have seen that little guy
CW: Many assumptions and basic maths beyond this point.
On the nes, megaman + rockman 3 sold ~65 million copies and since it was the 90's at the time of its release I dont think it's fair to say 100% of people made it more than halfway through the game so let's say that, just for the NES release, 60% of all people who bought the game (39 million) saw this lil fella (this one specifically not the enemy type)
But of course then there was the rockman/megaman legacy collection which itself sold quite well (nowhere near the original but still) (around 2 million units) so I went to the ps4 trophies and about 20% had beaten rock/megaman 3 (400k people)
This means that 40 million (give or take a few mil) have individually encountered this enemy
'Yeah?, so what?'
So shut up dear reader, im not done yet
Rockman 3 isnt a game you play once, its extremely replayable, casual players, challenge runners, and speedrunners can all play this game hundreds of times individually, heck it's my 4th favourite classic rockman game and I've played it at least 3 times so I think it's fair to say that for every individual who has seen this fella sproinging around the place
They have been encountered at least 1.5 times (60 million times)
'And?'
Obviously this information has no practical use in any way but nonetheless I couldnt sleep last night due to thinking about it
How many people waited on the ladder for them to pass?
How many people defeated them?
How many people got hut or died?
And so I began to wonder what their favourite form of encounter was
Did they prefer the player to wait underneath so nobody gets hurt?
Do they find it gratifying when they hit the player or make them lose a life?
Do they prefer when a player defeats them, as it show skill/mastery of the game?
Are they a trans ally?
How much fast food have they eaten in their life?
Do they feel as if they are sysiphus, repeating the same action with the same timing until the heat death of the universe, and if so are they happy?
'Annie, shut up videogames arent real they cant have feelings'
Even disregarding that, how many peoples lives has the little guy affected in some way?
How many people remember them in a year from now?, how many of you will remember them after reading this post?
Has this dude made people give up on videogames forever, or encouraged people to keep on playing games, even carrying on to do so now?
How many people who have never played the game know about them and their little antics?
Has anyone been affected by this guy to a point where it has a tangible impact upon their life (eg someone watching gamechamp's video, that one joke putting them over the edge to start following her and due to this them getting out of an anti-sjw rabbit hole they had been stuck in for years)?
And how much of this will ever become public knowledge?
Does the Japanese dev who was probably on their 6th cup of coffee that night care about this specific guy or were they too tired to give a shit?
That's all I really have to say
There isnt supposed to be some grandiose conclusion to this post, this was just a thought I had that I felt I needed to get out of my brain
Link to ganechamp's video is here, I'd highly recommend you watch it and her other stuff
If you made it to the end of this post uhh thanks?
Wait am I supposed to give you somthing?
Gimmie a minute
*metal clanking* *cartoon gong sound effect* *cat screeching* *glass breaks*
Here's a btw creature I drew in like 3 minutes please leave now
¹the video was like 11 months old I'm just exaggerating
I can’t wait for Gamechamp to post
“Can you beat stardew valley without using the wiki”
TIL that Gamechamp3k's pronouns are she/they, and I'm so happy?? Idk when she came out with that, considering some of her old stuff uses masc pronouns and she's never addressed it, but it's super cool that someone whose content I've loved for a long time is trans/nb
