a/n: I wrote most of this at like 2am and revised it the morning after..
You didn’t talk to people much in person due to having social anxiety and getting annoyed easily; the people you did talk to, you weren’t close to. You were only in your element when you were talking to people online, and found a site where you could do just that. (Basically a mix of Discord and Roblox) That’s where you met him: Ben_Dr0wned.
You were both in a server for one of your favorite games. You were bragging about unlocking a secret skin, one that not even Ben had yet due to it just being released. He friended you, because he thought you were cool, and immediately started chatting about the game after you accepted.
It’s been a few months since then and Ben had become your closest friend, and you assumed you were his. That was until he started leaving you to play with his other friends.
Knowing he had other friends twisted something ugly in your chest. You told yourself that he was getting tired of you and was replacing you, why else would he start distancing himself from you?

“Ben, I told you to leave the spirit box for me! You hog it every time we play and don’t even use it.” You turned your little Phasmophobia character to look at Ben’s. He had somehow hacked the game to let him import Link into the game as his character. You’d have to ask him how later.
“Dude, I swear to god I’m gonna use it this time. I’m gonna be a pro spirit box user, just you wait.” He started laughing and hopped out of the van before going into the eery, run-down house.
You followed him but he stopped before going in and sighed. “Uhh, my group kinda wants me to play another game with them..” He clicked his tongue and you sighed, already knowing he’d leave you for them.
Tapping your fingers on your desk, you said “Can’t you play with them another day? Like, you’re always with them.” You muttered the last part, kinda hoping he heard it. You suddenly got an idea and sat up fast, hitting your knee on your desk and wincing. “Ow.. anyway! Do you think your friends would mind if I joined you in… whatever you play?” You sounded excited, like maybe you could show Ben that you weren’t annoying or weird. Or would he think you’re annoying just for asking?
Ben made a hesitant noise before sighing. “I- I mean… I’d have to talk to them first…” You agreed and he left the call. You started biting your nails and slowly started to regret asking.
One thing that you hated was meeting new people through calls. Messaging first and then getting comfortable enough to call was your go to. You didn’t even know anything about Ben’s friends.
You watched a new group chat pop up at the side of your screen, it was titled, “Ben’s Kittens.” You scoffed and clicked on it, pulling up the members list. There were about 15 people but only 4 were online, including Ben. Their users and display names read: nocturnal_starrz (Nina 💞), toby1234523 (Toby), clockwork6 (Nat ⏱️). Only the Nina girl seemed to care about her username, you noticed. You clicked out of the member list and realized they had started typing.
Nina 💞:

You were going to say something but hesitated, what if you did something and they thought you were weird? Or what if they somehow convinced Ben not to be friends with you anymore?
Nina 💞:
whats ur name!! oh nvm its your display XD

Toby:
Maybe your scaring her lmao

Ben started tagging you and Nina joined in. You sighed before finally deciding to click on the message bar.

A smile grew unconsciously on your lips, Nina seemed really nice. No one else was really messaging but those 2 others were still online.

What game were you guys gonna play?
Toby:

Nina 💞:
toby is obsessed with roblox cuz hes #weird XD we should play one of those cheap horror games

I’m not playing any of you’re wierd games You always make us play stupid shit

They were kinda putting a lot of pressure on you. Toby was off putting and Nat didn’t really seem like she cared to talk to you. You wanted to impress them with your game choice but you didn’t really know how. Minimizing the site, you click onto Steam and start scrolling through it. What kind of game would they even like? Toby liked roblox but you don’t bother with it and don’t know much about it.
You were about to click the search bar when a random game popped up and took up your whole screen. It was some old racing game that allowed for complete customization of everything and allowed you to race against your friends. “What the hell..” You tried closing out of it but it wouldn’t move so you groaned and ran a hand down your face.
It suddenly minimized and opened the group chat instead. You looked down at the wires connected to your computer, they were all tangled but didn’t seem odd so you turned back to your computer. The game link was already in the chat bar, the others were still arguing with each other and probably didn’t notice you hadn’t responded yet.

The game lasted longer than you expected. The call was a lot less awkward and you actually talked a lot. You really liked Ben’s friends, especially Nina. They were a little odd with things they said but you mostly phased it out.
You got up at around 4am and changed into pajamas, your eyes and back hurt when you lay down in bed and you couldn’t sleep for a while. School was gonna suck the next day, but at least you stayed up late doing something fun.
