Lhasa Tibet 1997. Ganden Monastery. I was really sad to leave Tibet, it has everything an adventure traveller could want. Breathtakingly beautiful and rugged scenery, including the world’s highest and most famous mountain. Incredibly kind and beautiful people, forged out of the harshness of the landscape. A way of life unchanged for centuries, it almost feels like time travel is possible and this could be any time in history. And of course there is the adventure element, trying to lose that one Chinese man who keeps following you, perhaps out of boredom or perhaps an undercover agent keeping an eye on you! Trying to avoid the Chinese checkpoints and constant demands for correct travel permits which will take up half your day! Trying to have a conversation with a local Tibetan in Tibet without being moved on by an arbitrary Chinese man. Challenges aside Tibet and the Tibetans did find a warm place in my heart.
