MagiDragon + GaoLion / Magi Gokai-Oh + Gao Gokai-Oh / Shinken Gokai-Oh

If Gokaiger is known for anything, it’s being showy, and of course they’d try to translate that to the toys. Of the five auxiliary machines present in Gokaiger, I thought these two as well as Furaimaru did the best job, while PatStriker and Machalcon do this a bit weaker. Now, my opinions have shifted a little after getting my hands on these two, but my rankings for these five haven't changed.

MagiDragon: The Good: The details on this guy’s sculpt are great. As I have an actual MagiDragon to compare it to, I’m able to see just how well they translated the details from the original’s onto this smaller version’s sculpt. Even if you don’t own a Gokai-Oh, if you do own a MagiKing I’d actually suggest throwing this in with another order if you get a chance (as I frequently see it running for less than $3) just to see those comparisons. Its gimmick is also great, completely hiding itself away inside Gokai-Oh and having a very dynamic reveal. Both Furaimari and PatStriker do this, with the later being somewhat underwhelming, and the former being a step above this.

The Bad: While I do like this toy, it is very boring outside of its gimmick. It’s just red and black with very little other color showing. It’s meant to mostly be its gimmick with its solo form being a second. It’s also very reliant on springs, which I wonder how long they’ll last for.

GaoLion: The Good: GaoLion is massive and impressive in person. I knew it had to be big for Gokai-Oh to ride it, but I wasn’t sure just how big it’d be until I had it in hand. Also, while it doesn’t hide away its parts, it does utilize Gokai-Oh’s internal gimmick for an impressive reveal, though one I feel is outdone by MagiDragon. It also has multiple weapons you can use, with its Gokai Naginata and large Rekka Daizantou.

The Bad: For whatever reason, GaoLion uses translucent plastic for all its hinges that hold it together. As with most cases of translucent plastic, I’m very worried about future breakages. And while it does utilize the gimmick and represents two different Sentai teams very well, the arms on Shinken Gokai-Oh are distracting from any angle other than straight forward. Also, it was a combination revealed early on in the show, yet already requires you to discard two of the original five machines in order to combine with it.

Overall, these are two toys I’d say are more positive than negative, and two you should absolutely get if you own a Gokai-Oh if for no other reason than their prices. I frequently see MagiDragon for under $3 and GaoLion for under $8, and for what you’re getting out of it, that’s a steal worthy of a pirate.
