SHOKUGAN MODELING PROJECT GaoIcarus
Finally, a GaoRanger model kit where I haven’t experienced any of the molds before. As a kid I had the English releases of GaoMuscle and GaoGod, so I’ve experienced 7.5 molds prior to building the SMPs (since the GaoMuscle GaoBison was the battery-powered one), and since GaoHunter reuses 2 or its 3 molds, and GaoKinight’s only new mold for me was GaoElephant, I know how most of the molds have worked so far. Because of that, this was probably the release I’ve been the most excited about, as it was 4 new molds that I’ve never experienced in hand before.
Thoughts: GaoFalcon is ridiculously huge, even as a model kit, which is very cool but also makes it a bit unwieldy. The eye swap gimmick is cool, but they’re hard to get out, and I scratched the paint on the blue ones trying to swap them. I also had to sand a few pieces so they’d fit, which isn’t an issue I had with any of the others to this degree. Cool, but the most problematic of the bunch.
GaoGiraffe and GaoDeers are both interesting, and are built differently from each other to better utilize each of their gimmicks, with GaoDeers having an extending waist. Neat; not much else to say.
GaoRhinos and GaoMadillo are very cool, and Rhinos does a lot of transforming, and more smoothly than GaoBison. My only issue is there’s a removable plate for the right foot with no storage as an animal, and GaoMadillo doesn’t lock into the leg well. My favorites of the bunch.
Only other things to mention is it comes with an attack effect part for GaoHunter, and a display stand that looks like the Animerium... except that stand broke almost immediately so be careful with it.
The Details: Previously I’d used the stickers most of the time, but there were a lot of details that had no stickers, so I chose to paint the inlaid details instead and use the stickers for the odd details. I painted the details on GaoFalcon, -Deers, and -Rhinos gold, and -Giraffe black and silver, as well as panel lined minor details on them all. Additionally, on GaoRhinos I painted the details on its horn as well as the shoulder groove black, and since I couldn’t replicate the purple on GaoMadillo I chose to panel line all the grooves instead.
Overall, this was definitely the kit I enjoyed building and final product the most, despite a few issues. That being said, it’s also the same price as the DX was on release. That also being said, it’s 1/4th the price of the DX now...
This is definitely a purchase you should think about before you make it. You will most likely enjoy it if you get it, but you should also know what you’re getting into beforehand. Happy building.
I’m so happy I bought this
You guys know how much I love Wild Force
Can finally form the Pegasus megazord
Plus the electrics still work so it can walk around the room and rear up and roar by remote control
Just wish the western GaoElephant could be held as a sword and shield by these guys
