Gap Game aims at confronting methods, points of views and cultures.

While wandering about a district, while roaming the city, students will take notes of their journey and draw a map out of it. They will notice hollow places, spaces, empty places… These might be 5 sqcm, other 50 sqm wide. The students will choose of these « gaps », or maybe a series of gaps which look alike, and they will imagine a play area. It could be a play area for children or adults, a playground, in relationship with its surroundings, insitu interaction. Let’s create, let’s install and let’s play!

Built district, lived district

Intention Involve yourself inside story of your district.

Aim Make an urban performance or installation which allows to show the story and the life experience of districts residents. The project seeks to give importance to tellings of residents with a collection of little stories/anecdotes to stage them inside the district. Urban area becomes big medium of story like a theater to reveal his culture.

PROGRAM -

Monday - Walk in the district in order to make the students feel the general atmosphere. Take pictures of different architectures and sketch to create a sensitive mapping and personal astonishment report. Then, the work team chooses one experimentation area of installation which must have singularities and notable things.

Tuesday - Set up a workshop to reap tellings of residents : meet residents ! Create conversations with autochthons to know habits and alternatives uses of district. This workshop wants to remember old facts too, somes places who people used differently, notorious people who were important for these districts… Lead the workshop to experimentation area and keep a record of all tellings (make storyboard, writings, movies,...).

Wednesday and Thursday - Invest and flood the experimentation area to stage the residents stories. Create a sensitive frame inside of urban built to give experiences life of district. Everything is possible.

Friday - Have fun with your installation, show collection of urban tales, play characters in the setting/decor you created and don’t forget to film !

Sensible journey

Goal :  Reveal, bring out and draw attention to sensitive territory details. Intentions : Create stroll and process based on the senses. Setting a new rythm to space passage. Imagine various forms of urban installation Keep a thread from point to point Before workshop : Define randomly a quarter zone

- PROGRAM -

MONDAY

First site visit : choose between 3 and 5 details to work on (architectural element, plant, street art…)

If it’s possible try to meet inhabitants and choose with us the details

Take pictures, make drawings… on site.

TUESDAY  

Draw a sensitive cartography of the area

Creation phase and pooling of ideas

At least half a day for the creation phase then a collaboration work in order to put in common all the ideas and choose the several installations to create.

Distribution of the work then make a list of all the elements to produce.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY

Alternate between creating at the studio and going on the field.

The streets are talking

This workshop deals with the problem of information saturation that we can find in public space because of profusion of supports and communication media that make the pedestrian pay less and less attention to what surrounds him. For this gap game, we will try to find several ways to create attention to these users by appealing their senses in order to open their eyes on what it’s front of them.

Intention -  Educate anew the eyes to look at the urban landscape

Objective -  Create a connection between the pedestrians and the street calling his senses. How to make the street talk ? How to appeal the attention of the pedestrian ?

Day 1 - 1st visit

> morning - restitution (sensible maps, roughs , restitution of sensations)

> afternoon - dialogue all together - think about the different installations

Threshold(s): sensitive territory and movement

The group will experiment the construction of transport means, in agreement with the resources found in the territory. Collect the remarkable, sensitive and perceptible notions of a zone. The typology of the ground, the presence of different ways of flow, establish the differences between the organic and the mineral things, the expression of the elements etc. All those sensitive conditions will lead to constructions, experiments that allow to travel the space in a sensitive and original way.

Aim  Through the elements collected by the appreciation of a chosen space, summon them in order to transpose sensitive notions into a program, directly linked to this segment of space. For example, question the presence of spatial borders that only permit the train-passing. If the railways are abandoned, then how to cross them physically and mentally in narrow agreement with these devices and the human-centered experience.

- PROGRAM -

Monday - Morning : free appreciation of the space by bicycle or by foot

Afternoon : compare the zones where sensibilities were felt, and name or estimate them. Choose an interesting zone to travel.

Tuesday - Morning : continue to collect the sensitive notions, the harvest of elements, materials that could be implemented (pallet, wheel, cover, axle, frame, anchor...)

Afternoon : Define one or 2 hypothesis of vehicle that allows a sensitive approach/use to one of the revealed zones (example : how to enter a former maintenance yard, how to cross several roads, paths and borders) .

Wednesday - Morning : collect materials, make tests of assembly, conceive a model, think of a prototype

Afternoon : conception of a scale -1 mean of transport, specific for the human's use in the chosen zone.

Thursday - Morning : construction and test if possible

Afternoon : end of the construction and last adjustments, documentation of unwound

Friday - Project : testing the productions all day long

Users designers

A workshop led by designer students who escort and create objects with users. Objects must be reconsidered, perturbed, thought back, transformed to be reinvented. This workshop proposes to the users to reclaim objects. This workshop is a way to discover mores skills, discover more materials and to work them by himself.

- PROGRAM -

Day 1 - Visiting the site

Collect object and classify them by category

Days 2, 3 and 4 - be together in common intentions, sketches, tests, no more than 2 hours by object

Days 5 - games visit, each player tries to experiment in short time, exhibition

Reveal and put forward greenery

You have to think about a sensible journey to reveal the nature around the city. It can be just a little piece of nature, with a little sprouting between two pavements, or it can be a big green space like a park. You have to light them on. There is a lot of kinds of nature, like differents wild plants or big artificial and maintained parks.

Your first goal is to highlight all the nature spots and then to show them to the city-dwellers. If you light on all these places, the city-dwellers can be interested by the nature in their neighbourhood.

You can imagine installations, with different forms. They will have to adapt to the places they will stand in. Then you have to imagine a journey between those installations.
