Luis Alfredo Garavito a.k.a "La Bestia" was born January 25th 1957 in Colombia. He is thought to be one of the worst or THE WORST serial killers of all time. He grew up the oldest of 7 brothers and apparently was severely mentally, physically, and sexually abused as a child. He went on to kill upwards of 300 children based on the maps he drew while in prison. THE MURDERS. Garavito's victims were poor children or children living on the streets who were between the ages of 6-16 years of age. He would approach them on the street or in the countryside and would offer them things like gifts or money to gain their trust. After gaining their trust he would take these children on walks and once they grew tired he would molest and rape them, torture them, and slit their throats. Often times the bodies were dismembered and mutilated. Garavito was captured on April 22nd 1999. He confessed to murdering 140 children and was charged with killing 172 altogether throughout Colombia. He was found guilty of 139 of the 172 killings(the others are still ongoing). Although the maximum sentence in Colombia multiplied by 139 comes to 1,853 years, Colombian law limits imprisonment to 40 years. Due to the fact he helped police find some of the bodies, as well as giving them his confessions, his sentence was reduced to 22 years in prison. Giving him the chance to qualify to be released even earlier on good behavior. Due to a public uproar in Colombia the law has since been changed making it possible for people who commit horrible crimes such as Garavito did to be able serve more time in prison.
