@calyxaomphalos above is how my three most recent saffron seasons have gone. I didn’t specifically count before that, but spurred by extreme saffron nerdistry, I have some estimates.
In 2012, I put 20 corms in the ground and got one bloom that season. That sounds like your experience with the corms I sent you last year.
In 2013, I have no count, but my flowers all arrived between Oct 6-13.
2014 was the year my dad harvested while I was attending Fall Fest/ Bonedance. He noted he got 38 flowers in one day, that’s all. First to last dates were Oct 14-Nov 1. However, going back to my own Tumblr posts from that fall, there’s one where I was counting threads (Dad pulled all the stigma trios apart) and mention I have a bit more than 300 threads, which is at least 100 flowers.
2015 count total was 122 flowers, dried crop weight came to a gram. I kept no off-season care notes pre-harvest but after the harvest I read a lot and began to incorporate biodynamic growing principles, not just organic, and alchemical timing. And noting a lot more.
In 2016, I split corms in June, digging up 130 (20 became 130 in four years), and replanting 70. My fall bloom total was 46, and may have been due to me missing some of my soil amendments as well as changing summer weather, moreso than harvest-time rain. 2017, I amended properly (right mix of nutrients, right times) and that dry week over Halloween was a gift. But watching and reading makes me think that I may start to involve row covers in future especially if my harvest is shifting to encompass November.
