I spent the rainy day today creating my first ever permaculture planting calendar. The planting calendar tells you when to plant different types of vegetables based on the cycles of the moon. Certain vegetables grow better if they’re grown in a certain phase of the moon. My little chart describes what is to be planted when: 🌑💚 new moon - leafy greens 🌓💙 first quarter - fruiting annuals (like tomatoes, squash, beans, etc.) 🌕💜 full moon - root veg, flowers, and perennials 🌓❤️ last quarter - improve the soil, harvest for storage, weeding In addition to this, vegetables need to be planted during certain months to avoid the frost or extreme heat. I found an amazing planting chart based on the elevation in my area that gives you the time frames for each vegetable. Those dates are laid out in my calendar. It felt great to familiarize myself with the new climate zone I’m in as well as 2019’s moon cycles. I have the confidence I need now to have a successful gardening season, even if I don’t have every day planned out to a T! A guideline is great for gardening because every day can be different.
