I think it's safe to say that Garfield and Arlene were my first ever OTP, because I thought they were such a cute pair, LONG before I was introduced to the idea of pairings and ships. By that, I mean I saw them as a couple as far back as when I was learning to read. XD And I feel that this was a great example for a fictional pairing, because the two of them just bounce off each other, and aren't always shown to be perfectly lovey-dovey sweet. Garfield has shown plenty of times that he does indeed love being around Arlene, but often has trouble trying to express that without messing it up with a statement that probably sounded way better in his head ("And I like myself, Arlene." *she leaves in disappointment* "I like myself when I'm with you, that is..."). He's often trying to impress her and make himself appear more macho, usually trying to flex what little muscles he may have or puff out his chest and suck in his stomach (many strips feature him getting it wrong or something, and they are HILARIOUS). But he also likes to tease her, often about the gap in her teeth, though he's more than once indicated that he likes that gap anyway ("When you smile, you look like a vending machine." *she grabs him and swings a fist around ready to sock him as he says nervously* "Check that: A CUTE vending machine!"). If he's not using her name or making up teasing nicknames about her tooth gap, he's usually calling her names like "Babe", "Babycakes", "Baby", or even "Little Lady", I should add. Likewise, Arlene seems to be well aware that there's a possibility of them going a step further beyond "just friends" or "fence companions", as she's usually trying to get a kiss out of him or trying to get him to admit why they see each other (In the later years, Garfield became kind of oblivious to her hints of a kiss, and the one time he did catch on, Odie jumped in between them). She even once got very angry when she saw that Garfield was with another female cat (who was really happening to be passing by and said "Hey there!" When Garfield was waiting for Arlene), and called him a "Two Timing Swine", much to his confusion, but eventually concluded that she'd really be the only one interested in him anyway (a standby that Garfield takes brief offense to). Arlene can also rival Garfield in snarkiness and wit, and there has been plenty strips where they just toss playful banter back and forth. Then there's the moments when Garfield tries to compliment her in his own way. He's said that she's the second most beautiful cat he's ever known (second to himself). He's indicated that food is pretty much the only thing that he likes more than her. He once tried to be romantic by comparing her features to Italian food ("Your lips are as red as spaghetti sauce..."), only to almost go crazy when he realized just how much she reminded of his favorite food. When asked if he only ever thinks about himself, his response was "That's not true! Sometimes I think about you thinking about me!" Then there's this: Garfield: Hey, Arlene. What's my most out standing feature? Arlene: You're fat. Garfield: You hear that? She likes me for my body! Adjusting for how Garfield is a bit of a self centered, lazy, cynical and snarky character... His actions to Arlene are actually quite sweet most of the time, especially when he apologizes for stepping over the line. These two are easily one of the best fictional couples out there, in my opinion. And they're cats! :3
