So yeah, I believe you could get through the barrier with two human SOULs rather than a human SOUL and a monster SOUL. If I remember correctly, Alphys framed it as being about the amount of power, rather than the specific type of SOUL?

A human SOUL isn't strong enough to cross the barrier alone. It takes at least a human soul… And a monster soul.

Hmm, I guess that's not super clear-cut, but I took the "isn't strong enough" to mean that it's just a question of having more power, and a monster SOUL provides that amount of power.

…And, I guess, taking SOULs is the only way Alphys knows about to get more of that sort of power, and she doesn't think that a human taking another human's SOUL or a monster taking another monster's SOUL is possible either. I like to think that it is, at least under certain conditions, but of course I don't actually have any evidence for that.

Also, Sans and Toriel? I don't remember either of them saying anything about that, even with the judgement thing right before I met Asgore. That better not be a spoiler (≖_≖)

…And that would explain why Toriel says not to come back, if she knows that leaving the cavern requires killing Asgore. She also said "I hope you understand", though, so it probably wasn't completely based on information I didn't have at the time.
