I didn't know what nanowrimo was until now, and I want to know why it's a bad thing? It looks like a great way to get motivation spurring in some people who need a push to write (lol me).

nanowrimo isn’t a bad thing. publishing a nanowrimo project is a bad thing. 

i feel like i addressed this in the post you’re replying to, but the way nanowrimo is structured means the focus is ONLY on writing a lot of words (50,000) in a short period of time (the month of november). when you need to write a lot very quickly, you don’t bother to put a lot of thought into your choices. you don’t have time to plot your novel well, or make sure the pacing is good, or come up with believable dialogue, or do pretty much anything but write the first goddamn thing that comes into your head. it lends itself easily to a certain type of writing voice that is inherently very juvenile.

and that’s fine if you don’t plan to publish it. i did nanowrimo six times as a teenager. i’m doing nanowrimo right now because it’s honestly kind of fun! developing the habit of writing often is a good thing. but it’s an exercise!!! and that’s IT! you’re not SUPPOSED to come out of it with something publishable, and hank green didn’t! for some reason it seems that no one told him he should have started over, so his book actually made it into the world... like this.
