Original Joni Mitchell watercolor for her album "Ladies of the Canyon."
"Mama Cass's house ... her daughter, Owen's birthday party in 1969. My friend Gary Burden and I were there. Somebody must have picked up my camera... cuz I didn't take this!"- Henry Diltz via Facebook
REMEMBERING CASS ELLIOT ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HER PASSING (b. 19 SEPT 1941 - d. 29 JULY 1974)
“Cass was a miracle to everyone who knew her. An earth lady and a social catalyst who laughed all the time and made you feel good.” - Henry Diltz “To the greatest possible extent that she could she made a life for her child. Even in the midst of all the insanity of rock in the 60s — there was a family, a home there.” - Gary Burden “There will never be anyone like her in my lifetime. I will never have a friend like her, or an influence like her. And I will never hear another voice like hers.” - Michelle Phillips “When you haven’t had a record out in two years and people come up to you on the street, or at luncheonettes, or at gas stations, and they say, ‘I can’t tell you how much your music has meant to me!’ I mean — that’s real! They really say that to me. Can you imagine? The feeling that you get to know that you did something that you dug and other people dug it so much that even though they haven’t heard from you in two years, they still remember it. They still enjoy it. It brought them something. And it’s only since I really left the group that I realise what a- almost a fixture the ‘Mamas and Papas’ are.” - Cass Elliot

RIP Gary Burden
Roll another number for the road
Rolled another number for the road. A perfect shot snapped by photographer Henry Diltz with his right hand as he takes the joint from album cover artist Gary Burden who hasn’t yet exhaled. Neil Young, way stoned, probably rolled the reefer. Or I hope he did, anyway. It’s somewhere in rural California, no doubt, sometime in the 70s. Diltz is still very lively and kicking and posts stuff like this…
