Platinum Weird, The Archies and The Heights may have been fictional, yet you cannot really say they became that, because those behind them were ashamed of the music they did. Yes, there is a precedence for a band like that, i.e. Steam. The outfit is known for this ditty, which is another pastiche, the virtual musicians seem to be quite adept at them, whose laissez faire mirrors the propulsion of the entire composition. The song 'borrows' heavily from everything that was popular during the 60's and thus resembles a version of a typical hit of that period on steroids. I assume that is why they hid themselves, this tune's unabashed cheerful commercial appetite can be a sight to behold. Nonetheless, that does not make it terrible. While the other groups did that sort of thing better, they lacked the sheer ebullience of Steam.

Gary DeCarlo of “Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)” Fame Dead at 75

Gary DeCarlo, who co-wrote and sang a massive 1969 hit that went on to become a baseball stadium staple during pitching changes, has died.

DeCarlo, who was 75, succumbed to cancer.

Though it was originally credited to Steam, who lip synched the track, DeCarlo was the voice and songwriter behind “Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye),” which spent 16 weeks on the charts 48 years ago.

Speaking to ClassicBands.com, DeCarlo likened Steam to an early version of Milli Vannilli.

“You’re paying money to go out and see these guys perform and they’re not the real deal,” he said. “So, obviously I walked away from it.”

DeCarlo’s contribution to the song was virtually unknown until 2011, when PBS aired a special called “My Music: ‘60s Pop, Rock & Soul.”

“RIP Gary DeCarlo,” Mickey Dolenz tweeted. “A very nice guy.”

Gary DeCarlo, Who Sang ‘Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,’ Is Dead: VIDEO

Gary DeCarlo, who sang lead on the hit song “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” which topped the charts in 1969 and has lived on ever since as an indelible sports stadium taunt, died on Wednesday in a hospice facility in Branford, Conn. He was 75.

His wife, Annette, said the cause was metastatic cancer.

Mr. DeCarlo wrote and recorded “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” with two friends and fellow musicians, Dale Frashuer and Paul Leka. The song was originally intended as the B-side of one of several songs Mr. DeCarlo had recorded with Mr. Leka.

It began as two verses that the friends had written years before, with the opening lines: “He’ll never love you / The way that I love you / ’Cause if he did, no no, he wouldn’t / Make you cry.”)

The song became an earworm thanks to the addition of a repeating playground chant, “Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye.”
