A "Fake" Duet Turned No. 1 Hit: In 1978, a spliced-together version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" turned into a surprise smash single.
That summer, Gary Guthrie, program director of radio station WAKY Louisville, Ky., created a virtual duet of Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond's "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." Each had released their own solo recording of the track -- Diamond in late 1977 and Streisand in 1978. Guthrie's version proved to be so popular with listeners on WAKY, other radio stations copied the idea and made their own "Flowers" duets. Eventually, Columbia Records -- who had released both solo versions of "Flowers" -- decided to release a proper duet of the song. Diamond and Streisand recorded a new version together and the single was released in October of 1978. It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Oct. 28 and shot to No. 1 just five weeks later.
