FDA Indication/Dosages:
To alleviate or relieve the symptoms of gas: Adults: One dose four times a day after meals and at bedtime. Maximum of 500 mg per day.
Pharmacology: Simethicone is an inert silicon polymer that reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the GI tract thereby allowing them to escape easily by belching or passing flatus. Simethicone is not absorbed into the blood stream. Calcium carbonate increases gastric pH by neutralizing acid in the gastric lumen.
Evaluation: Patients may complain of excess or continuous belching or flatulence or painful cramping in the gastrointestinal tract. Excess gas can be caused by food or drug intolerance or excessive air swallowing. Painful cramping may be a sign of a serious disease. Patients should be advised to refrain from consuming foods that may cause excess gas.
Contraindications/Precautions: The only known contraindication is sensitivity to simethicone. If this product does not relieve painful gas symptoms, a physician should be consulted.
Adverse Effects: Increased belching or passing flatus is a result of the mechanism of action.
