To Robert Herrick, To Fear Much of Crones
I’ll gather me buds whenever I may
Middle age I’m done a-fighting
And this old girl who sighs today
Tomorrow will be high-fiving
The glorious klieg light of heaven, the Moon
The fatter she’s a-getting
the wider her spider’s web is spun
the less male-gaze I’m a-fretting
That age is best which is the now
When broken hearts beat on, much stronger
but man’splain ageism to me, Robert
And I’ll listen to ye no longer
We be not shy and time’s up you see
so while I’m talking, please be quiet
for having lost the patriarchy,
you dudes unleashed a Grab-Back Riot.

First image is John Williams Waterhouse’s tribute to the original Herrick poem: “Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May,” - a poem that has always bugged me.
