24th August 1580, birth of English poet John Taylor, who called himself "The Water Poet", due to his dual profession as a poet and Thames boatmen, ferrying passengers across the River Thames in London. Due to his ferrying of actors and playwrights, he became known to the literary society of London, as well as gaining notoriety for his eccentric travelling: including sailing from London to the Kentish Coast in a paper boat with two dried codfish tied to canes for oars. On the same day in 1591, fellow English poet Robert Herrick was also born, best known for his carpe diem poem, "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" . ``Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying’.
