・❥・ The Credibility of Nick Carraway ・❥・
Nick's credibility diminishes as it is very evident that he is fond of Gatsby. There is this gradual transition where Nick grows a sudden distaste for his East Egg acquaintances. In my opinion, Nick's admiration may be the values Gatsby embodies since people of the lost generation dropped tradition values and indulged in hedonistic lifestyles filled with self-indulgence. Gatsby may seemed like a fresh breath of air with his hope and optimism. His ability to dream may have also inspired a lifeless Nick who has been a witness to many stories. If there was another narrator, they wouldn't have been able to create meaning to the story as Nick did. Nick is the middle man. He has connections to both sides of society; the posh and the dirty. He indirectly knows everyone's secrets and goals. Without him, the story wouldn't have been as developed. I think what Nick means that he is unbiased is his ability to not spill secrets and refrain from bias when talking to people. He just listens. But with Gatsby, he actually starts developing his own thoughts and perceptions to the story. "The Great Gatsby" is Nick's awakening.
