I think a good line that shows Tom’s character in the great gatsby musical is when nick says that he couldn’t make the wedding because of the war Tom says “that’s everyone’s favorite excuse” just the implication of that line, not caring that Nick could have died not giving weight to him actually going to war, implying the wedding is more important than the war so many implications

I don’t know if you got this asked before, but how different is your Tom compared from the original book? I’m curious about his characterization.

For Tom, a main thing for him is that you get more of his work life (I’m doing this with all other characters) and the work impacts how he interacts with the world/his biases/his temperament.

In my retelling, he’s currently running for NYC Mayor (watching Mamdani’s campaign was really fun while writing) and he’s also the heir of a long running, very profitable construction company

He still has similarities to OG Tom but his work gives more context as to why he interacts the way he does

yes we GET it we understand that Gatsby is oblivious. Yes, I've heard it over and over that Nick would not call Gatsby by his first name even if they ended up... dating? because he doesn't feel worthy.

Oh not to mention how half of the fandom will skin you alive for shipping Tom with Nick, even though Gatsby is just as bad to Nick as Tom was. Nick literally describes Tom like a horny motherfucker and Nick at least can call Tom out on his bullshit. Gatsby manipulated Nick throughout the whole book and Nick just took it and rode his dick after.

Not to say Natsby is bad, I love it and it's my favorite, but y'all are boring AF and think of it as some reciprocated ship when Gatsby did not gaf about Nick.

Spoilers for Great Gatsby despite the fact it's like a hundred something year old novel.

Been reading a little bit of Great Gatsby recently (I just read four chapters so not much.) And I can see why people like it despite the fact you could argue all of them are kind of assholes. Especially Tom, I hate Tom so much.

He's kind of an annoying pretentious dick and is also an open racist or white supremacist in the first chapter. Granted I should have expected that there was some sort of racism and prejudice given it's a 1920s novel set in the 20s. It doesn't help that he seems to not care about his wife as much as he should have. But idk I've only read the first four chapters. I want to finish the book before making such drastic assumptions.

One thing I wish this fandom did was to look at characters past just this lense of.. like.. good and evil? Like obviously yes we all have pretty good moral compasses (give or take) when it comes to tgg and that's great to recognize when characters aren't good people. But like. They ALL aren't good people. We all idolize characters like Nick and Gatsby when they should be getting the same scrutiny as characters like Tom and Daisy should. (And don't just say "cough cough! Tom's racist!" Because.. hey hate to break it to you, so is Nick.)

I do kind of wish this fandom looked at characters like Tom or George more. Obviously it doesn't have to be like.. they're the focus of the fandom, obviously not, that'd be crazy. But it'd be nice if we could throw out this like moral high ground of "Tom is just TOO BAD TO LIKE!!" and just kind of looked at his character for a bit. He's interesting as a character, same with George, and Daisy, and Myrtle. And hell, even Jordan. Like these characters within the novel are interesting and should have some moment of recognition for that.
