but the three people who died at the end of the Great Gatsby were the only characters from poor backgrounds - despite Gatsby's immense wealth and reputation, no matter how many parties he threw or millionaires he made friends with, he could never escape his fate.

Daisy and Tom and Nick all moved on as if nothing happened, because they were the people the American Dream was tailored to, those were the people who benefitted from a meritocratic society, and Gatsby was too poor in his history, as were Myrtle and her husband, so they had to die - they had to be discarded because that green light was never supposed to be within their reach.

i gotta post more often i just realised my last post was so long ago 😭

anyway though here's Daisy and Gatsby let me know if you can spot all the symbolism

i lowkey spent weeks on this

I always add too much detail and no one can ever see it I literally coloured the veins on their hands for pete's sake and I spent hours researching 1920s suits and shoes

i think tumblr compressed this to the point that you can't even see the green highlight in gatsby's eye :(

i am truly shocked, appalled, even, that I can't find any natsby fics where gatsby witnesses his own funeral and sees that only nick carraway shows up to the final party gatsby will ever throw

the heartbreaking idea of gatsby watching nick desperately try to find people to come to gatsby's funeral, watching him field all the funeral questions because no one else cared, all while still horribly grieving gatsby and hearing gatsby's voice in his head and the sldfjlasdhf the "I'll get somebody for you, Gatsby. Don't worry. Just trust me and I'll get somebody for you---" IS SOOOOO GARGH GARGH IM CRAZY IM CRAZY

the realization that nick actually loves him reconciling with the last words nick said to him which was of course the famous:

and ofc bc i love a happy ending it'd be a time travel fix-it where gatsby gets to go back and do it all again but he's in love with nick instead of daisy
