04/20/21 - Gaviota Beach, CA - CALIFORNIA SPRINGTIME - All good things must end. We’ve enjoyed our two-night sojourn at Gaviota Beach and all the wildflowers. Our proximity to the ocean has made it even more special. While it’s hard to leave, we know that we have a bunch more ‘hard to leave’ places on the schedule to look forward to. Onward!

04/19/21 - Gaviota Beach, CA - DEFENDING THE PATH - This morning we hiked a couple miles up to the Wind Caves where we had a great view of the wild flower-covered hills, our campground, the railroad bridge and the ocean. On the way back, we ran into two different rattlesnakes trying to cross the gravel hiking path. The first turned around. The second stuck around and decided to sun himself in the middle of the hiking path. We decided to roll a rock towards it hoping to get a reaction. As you can see, we did. After getting our pics, we rolled some more rocks towards it until it finally got the hint to move on. My guess is that the two snakes were pretty young: only a couple feet long and we could barely hear their short chain of rattles. Glad we were able to get by them without incident.

04/18/21 - Gaviota Beach, CA - THE PLAN - We will be taking a circuitous route to the Oregon Coast the next five weeks: starting from the Central California Coast where we are now, then the California National Parks, Grand Teton National Park and the Columbia River Gorge. The plan is to take our sweet time and max out on the eye candy. It’s going to be great: especially this time of year when the National and State Parks are far less crowded than the peak summer months. It’s going to be great. Can’t wait!
