Poor Coaching and Soft Secondary is why the Jags start 0-1
The title of this article says it all folks. There were some very good moments in this football game for the Jags, but there were way too many bad ones. Mainly coming from the Jags’ secondary. As a huge Cyprien fan, it breaks my heart to see his poor coverage skills. I can’t recall a play where he was thrown at and he was in a good defensive position. It looks like he's saying “oh s---” and sprinting for dear life to keep up every play. Davon House was also embarassed on several occasions. House isn't even in a terrible position half the time, but its like he loses every jump ball he's engaged in. Many will say poor pass rush is why we lost, and you would also be right. Besides Odrick stopping Rodgers from leaving the pocket one play, We never touched Aaron Rodgers again. You’re not going to beat the Packers with no pressure on A-Rod.. it is just not going to happen. Dante under performed. Malik did nothing but cost the jags’ D 2 third down conversions with bone-headed flags. This is a team that just oozes lack of discipline.
I love Gus Bradley’s energy, I really do, but his lack of discipline is becoming quite annoying to any Jag fan who knows their stuff. Let’s stay on the topic of bad coaching, and shift our focus to Greg Olson. Olson’s play calling was about as creative as the color rush uniform idea last season. I think we ran the same stretch play to Yeldon about 95% on first down. We completely misused the Allens in the first half of that game. We ran that terrible triple option play, where Lee motioned in the back field, way more times than we should have. You’re not going to full the Packer’s defense with terrible play calling like that.
However, the worst part of this loss was the blatant terrible clock management. I have never seen a losing NFL team blow their last 2 timeouts on back-to-back plays in the middle of the 4th quarter. Those timeouts sure would have opened up the playbook on that potential game winning drive. And do we even want to mention our 4th and 1 play selection? Yeldon had been running very powerfully, and Julius was finally looking like the TE we threw all that money at, and we called that play? We run a WR screen to a side of the field that had 2 DB’s and only one WR to block them. I don’t know if Olson is new to the NFL, but those numbers don’t usually tend to workout for you.
It is a shame, because this was a very winnable game and it would have been a great opportunity for the Jags to make a serious statement, and have teams not looking at Jacksonville game week as another bye week.
