Man up: Who has the most to prove after free agency Pt II
About a month has gone by since free agency opened up and there have been many intriguing storylines. From surprise retirements (Tony Romo), surprise un-retirements (Marshawn Lynch), and a bevy of blockbuster deals; this offseason certainly hasn’t disappointed. I already touched on this topic once before, noting three players who need to man up, but there are a few more who fit the bill here in Man Up As a quick recap, this is the criteria I’m looking at:
Players who joined a new team and are expected to be a savior
Athletes who are moving up the depth chart to fill the void of a departed star
Players with no more excuses after free agent additions
So without further ado, let’s see who needs to man up in this free agency period.
Adrian Peterson, RB; Man Up
So I’m starting off this list with a player who doesn’t fit any of the criteria.
Adrian on the field
It’s my article, bite me. A future Hall of Fame player doesn’t hit the open market often, and when he does, it frequently results in a massive payday. Except for Peterson. He is a living legend living in an era where running backs just aren’t valued like they used to be.
Being relegated to JAG status (just another guy) is one of the greatest running backs of all time. We have already seen guys like Latavius Murray and Eddie Lacy get signed with scant interest in Peterson. In fact, they stole two of the logical spots from Peterson in Minnesota and Seattle, respectively. Hell, the Raiders are more willing to roll the dice with Marshawn Lynch, who is coming back after a year of retirement, than him.
If/when Peterson gets a contract with a team he needs to prove that the questions surrounding his durability are unsubstantiated. He has only played 20 games in the past three seasons, and running backs generally start to decline after age 30…two years ago for AP. However, if there is one running back who can defy history, logic, and expectations; it’s Peterson. He will be playing with a chip on his shoulder too.
Eddie Lacy, RB, Seattle Seahawks
Eddie Lacy running the ball
Lacy’s career has so far been more up and down than his weight since entering the NFL in 2013. He started off strong enough, rushing for over 1,000 yards in his first two seasons with the Packers. He seemed to be settling in as the ground attack that Aaron Rodgers needed as balance. However, over the past two seasons, he barely topped 1,000 yards combined, leading to the end of his career in Lambeau.
Lacy bounced back relatively fast, finding a home in Seattle on a 1-year ‘prove it’ deal. Built in the mold of Seahawks legend Marshawn Lynch, Seattle seems to be the perfect place for Lacy to revive his career. It will be a tall task as he will battle with second-year hype machine C.J. Prosise and Thomas Rawls. If Lacy can’t carve himself out a significant role in the run-heavy attack Seattle employs, he will have a tough time reclaiming a starting role anywhere else in the league.
Devin Smith, WR, New York Jets
Devin Smith was drafted in 2015 to help flush out an already dangerous pair of receivers in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Thus far, the experiment has been a failure for the second rounder out of Ohio State. His career has been marred by injury thus far, suffering a torn ACL his rookie year that forced him to miss 11 months.
His third year in the NFL will look entirely different for him. Brandon Marshall has defected to the Giants, and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was dumped. He will have to step up to try and replace the production Marshall had to some extent. Coming out of college, Smith was billed as a speedy deep threat. He will have to show the Jets that his ACL injury hasn’t affected that. Otherwise, he could end up being on the wrong end of another roster makeover next year.
Trent Richardson Was A Bust Because Nobody Knew About Alabama's Offensive Lines Back Then
Trent Richardson, a operating again you keep in mind as a two-time nationwide champion at Alabama and the third decide of the 2012 NFL Draft, has been suspended by the Saskatchewan Roughriders as coaching camp begins. The destiny of the Roughriders isn't of a lot curiosity in these elements, however Richardson’s standing as one of many largest busts, like, ever, is. It seems clear now that the issue for Richardson and the 4 NFL groups that employed him from 2012-sixteen is that he was drafted earlier than everyone knew that all Alabama operating backs will put up big numbers, thanks primarily to an offensive line that has dominated school soccer like no different single unit within the sport. Nick Saban took the Alabama job in 2007, and that was the final yr Alabama’s operating recreation didn't completely pulverize the opposition — the highest two Alabama rushers that yr averaged 5.zero and four.2 yards per carry, respectively. Richardson’s profession st
