Yeah, I love their dynamic (which I know not everyone does), but I don’t ship them endgame either. They are each other’s training wheels!

I guess I like their potential dynamic, I like a lot of what I've seen so far, but I can see it developing in really good, interesting ways, and I can see it developing in really bad, problematic ways. I think my biggest problem lies in not being able to trust that the writers will take one of the good, interesting paths.

But even then, Malia needs to have a plot outside of Stiles. Kira and Allison both dated Scott, but they had their own stories, too. They both had personal growth. Same with Jackson and Lydia, and later Aiden and Lydia. Maybe once they push the "PS - Peter's your dad" plot forward a little more, Malia will become interesting.

I've been pretty down on her tonight, but it's not like I don't hold out hope. I still WANT Malia to be interesting. I still hope she gets a plot that helps define her as a character. I'm still curious about her past. I just haven't seen the follow-through yet so I can't just blithely accept her as my favorite new pack member.

I think she's probably less were-coyote than Coyote, trickster. Her attachment to Stiles is more interesting that way - plus the part where explaining how to human good probably anchored him post-nogitsune and let him find his own humanity.

That is one of many ways Malia COULD become an interesting, likable character. I would love to see Trickster!Malia. I would love to see the Stiles/Malia relationship evolve beyond Stiles saying "You have to do this to human good" and Malia attempting to distract him with physical affection (full disclosure, I don't want Stalia endgame, but if they're going to have a relationship I'd rather it be an interesting, dynamic relationship that involves character growth for both of them - PS, I talked more about my Stalia feelings post 401 here)

The point I was trying to make, I guess, is that even though Malia is a character with a lot of potential, nothing has been done with it yet. The writers kind of dropped the ball with her plot line, leaving a lot of people asking, "So.... what's she doing here?" and until the writers answer that question, there's going to be a lot of people that don't like or trust her.

Glad I'm not the only one! I feel like a lot of people feel the same way. It's not an inherent hatred of Malia Tate: Werecoyote, it's a mistrust of her role wrt our core cast.

I feel like Malia is sort of a human incarnation of teen wolf's general sloppy story telling problem - they do all this set up, get us on the edge of our seats waiting for the follow-through, and then they throw 6 new Big Bads at us all at once and crow "HA! I betcha didn't see that coming!" and we're left going "Nope. Sure didn't. Can we go back to the story you got me emotionally invested in now?" and they're like "LOL! Why would we rehash that old stuff? Here's some new blandly attractive white dude with no shirt on - :DDDDDDDD"

Reasons I Don't Like Malia Tate

She stopped contributing to the narrative the moment she shifted from a coyote to a girl

No, seriously. I wish I liked Malia. I wish I were interested or invested in her in some way. But back when she was a coyote, she related to the plot and as soon as she turned human she just kind of stopped being relevant to the narrative.

A lot of anti-Malia people are talking about how they don't trust her, how she gives them a weird feeling. I agree with that, and I think I've finally figured out why: I have no idea what role she plays in the story. 

I mean, look at the facts:

She was introduced as a were-coyote who accidentally shifted and killed her mom and sister when she was 8.

As a coyote, she was exceptionally attached to her sister's doll.

Then the pack finds her and, in an effort to stop her father from trying to kill her (thinking she was a wild animal who killed his family - actually mostly accurate), Scott goes all alpha on her and forces her to switch back.

Then we don't hear a damned thing about her for, like, half the season. Just - oops! Where did Malia go? I thought we were getting a new character! I guess this whole were-coyote/Scott, Allison, and Stiles dealing with the darkness around their hearts arc is done?

And then, just as things are getting really fucking dark for our core cast, and Stiles is being taken over by the Nogitsune and losing himself and hurting his friends and all we want to focus on is this key conflict that's reaching its breaking point - OH! Hi Malia, nice to see you! Where the hell have you been?

Did your father put you here because you're too hard to deal with?

Are you suffering from feral child syndrome?

Are you receiving How To Human Good lessons from Morrell?

We don't know! Then the interactions with Stiles start:

Reintroduced by punching our poor, suffering fave in the face out of nowhere

Then had a really awkward shower scene during which you told Stiles that she kind of hated him and Scott for forcing you to be human again

Great! You have a conflict with our core cast! You're gonna be an adversary, right?

Oops, nope, instead you're gonna have an ill-timed hookup with Stiles in a gross abandoned basement of the loony bin where you've been committed for unknown reasons, distracting from the EXTREMELY TIME-SENSITIVE SEARCH you two are in the middle of...... that makes sense.

Then, rather than getting further involved with the main plot (IE fighting the Nogitsune), thus positioning yourself as a new member of the core cast, you instead have a vaguely worded talk with Morrell (who we don't really trust, TBH) about finding someone to help you control the shift? Maybe?

Then march out of Eichen House as an unaccompanied minor without any indication of why you were there in the first place or if you've actually been released, and have a VERY SIGNIFICANT EYE FLASH that read as "Here's Malia, going on a mission, we don't know if it's good or bad, but she knows something and she's gonna do something with that knowledge."

So here we are, with all this set up for Malia to be doing something, to be taking some sort of action, to be driving some sort of plot, and here's Season 4, and--

So, what, she's just a member of the pack now? She's just been accepted at some point over the break, and we the audience are just supposed to embrace her? Where's the follow-through? Where's the mistrust of a newcomer giving way to friendship? Is Malia seriously just some cutesy adornment to provide comic relief because of her adorable inability to understand 11th grade math with a 2nd grade education, her endearing resistance to human social norms, and her puzzling relationship with Stiles that seems to be 1 part mentorship, 1 part romance, and 1 part codependency? 

Because I'm not here for that, honestly.

You want to make me like Malia? Give her a plot.
