Ring the Bell: Celebrating GE's 100th HA Unit Order
It is a continuous discussion whether conventional power is still needed to guarantee security of supply. Yes, it definitely is!
One proof for this statement is the order for GE’s 100th HA unit, a 9HA.02 gas turbine placed by MYTILINEOS S.A. for its Agios Nikolaos Power Plant in the Voiotia region in Greece. The order also includes a GE steam turbine and generator, as well as a multi-year service agreement. When operational, the plant is estimated to produce a thermal efficiency in excess of 63 %, making it one of the most efficient power plants in Europe and in the world.
The HA is the world’s fastest growing gas turbine fleet with 100 units ordered by more than 40 customers in 18 countries. The fleet has accumulated more than 415,000 operating hours of commercial experience.
This 100th HA unit with an output of 826 MW will reliably contribute to Greece’s energy security and stability.
After Opole Unit 5 having been connected to the grid in January this year, Opole Unit 6 followed mid of May - a project milestone called “first synchronization”. Or in other words: it means that Opole Unit 5 & 6 are now delivering power to the grid. Poland’s Minister of Energy, Krzysztof Tchórzewski, and the U.S. Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher, joined the partners at the Opole power plant to celebrate this milestone.
Once operational, the two units will supply 1.8 GW, enough electricity for two million homes or 8% of Poland electricity. Opole will be Poland’s third largest power plant and will play a critical role in Poland where electricity demand is expected to grow by 40% by 2040, according to Poland’s Ministry of Energy.

PGE (Polska Grupa Energetyczna) chose GE’s ultra-super critical (USC) coal technology for Opole 5 & 6 to use locally available hard coal and ensure best available technology in terms of plant efficiency. Opole Units 5 & 6 will have an efficiency rate significantly higher than the global average and provide stability to the Polish grid as the country seeks to introduce more renewables.
What does ultra-supercritical mean in concrete terms? It means that coal is burnt producing very high steam parameters, namely 600°C steam temperature and 250 bar steam pressure thus increasing the plant efficiency up to 46 % and reducing therefore the amount of coal by 20 % compared to conventional coal-fired power plants.
Michael Keroulle, GE Steam Power’s Chief Commercial Officer said, “We are proud to be part of Opole project which will stabilize the Polish grid using best in class technology to support the sustainable energy transition and further development of the renewable energy sources. Each milestone that we reach is a credit to the full consortium. This has been a team effort.” With both units synchronized to the grid, the next milestone is the Provisional Acceptance of Unit 5 which is expected by the end of May.
Henryk Baranowski, PGE’s Chief Executive Officer said, “Opole Units 5 & 6 will play an important role in Poland’s energy infrastructure as it is the biggest project in the Polish energy sector since 1989. Today, the plant is successfully delivering reliable power to the Polish grid. PGE’s investments in modern coal-based energy are enhancing the country’s energy security and facilitating a gradual replacement of old capacities in the system with units that are nearly one-third more efficient. The two new units in Opole will bring the country’s CO2 emissions down by 2.5 million tonnes.”
GE Steam Power’s scope for Opole Units 5 & 6 includes the USC technology, including boiler islands, the turbine islands, air quality control systems, as well as balance of plant. GE is also responsible for overall project management and general design of the technology and parts supplied and supports the consortium members – Polimex-Mostostal, Rafako and Mostostal Warszawa - in their scope of work.
Energy Efficiency Company Award for GE Factory in Hungary
A (virtual) power plant whose performance is measured in energy savings and not, as usual, in megawatt output? This idea is the centerpiece of the Virtual Power Plant Programme (VPPP) which was launched 10 years ago by the Hungarian so called „MI6“ which stands for „The Hungarian Innovation and Efficiency Nonprofit Ltd.” Meanwhile the activities of MI6 are widely acknowledged by international partners and the European Commission.

In the scope of the VPPP, GE Power Veresegyház factory has received the „Energy Efficiency Company“ Award on March 6, on the international „World Energy Efficiency Day“ What has GE exactly done to be honoured for its initiative? The GE factory has replaced more than two thousand obsolete, old light-sources by modern lamps manufactured with LED technology. Thanks to the project the factory saves 2,4 GWh electric energy yearly, preventing the emission of more than 2000 million tons CO2 into the atmosphere!
The award ceremony was held in the Hungarian Parliament in the presence of Áder János, President of the Hungarian Republic, who is the patron of the program and several high government officials. The award was handed to GE plant leader, Andreas Wilhelm.

Does it really make sense to build a new coal power plant today?
One thing is for sure: in the long-term future our path leads towards renewable energies. But it is a long way until we get there and to fuel sustainable economic growth and to support the development of renewables we need more flexible, reliable, dependable baseload which new generation plants like Ostrołęka C in Poland will deliver.

Andreas Lusch, CEO of GE’s Steam Power Business, has recently asked the question “Does it really make sense to build a new coal fired power station today” in an article published in the “Emerging Europe” Magazine.
On December 28, 2018, GE Steam Power was granted what we call “Notice to Proceed” by the Polish utility Elektrownia Ostrołęka to build Block C, a 1,000 MW coal power plant. This is an important step in the life of a project of this size, marking the full commitment of the main stakeholder, the government and state-owned utilities in this case, to building the project. For us, this is obviously good news. But beyond our own interest, what I see is a government deciding on what’s right for them with respect to delivering dependable, reliable, economical and (more) sustainable energy and as a result fuel the development of the country. And this is also a good thing.
GE supplies technology for all types of power generation so it is not our role to comment on any country’s energy plans including their mix of fuels. We are here to deliver the best and the most sustainable solution. So, let me quickly address the elephant in the room. Why would anyone build a new coal plant today? Poland, as other countries around the world, is facing an increasing demand for power and a need to stabilise its grid while introducing more renewable energies. The intermittency of renewables has created an emerging need for more flexible, reliable, dependable baseload which new generation plants like Ostrołęka C will deliver.
Now let me address the second elephant in the room. No, I’m not oblivious to what we read about coal in the media. Some would have us believe coal has no role to play in our energy future. And maybe in some countries, we have the luxury to make such statements. But that’s not the case everywhere. When there is no access to other fuels like gas, locally available coal provides reliable, affordable power. And when we support this with the cleanest possible solutions it helps the economy grow and supports the development of renewables.
To put this in context, Ostrołęka C is equipped with the latest ultra-supercritical technology and will reach up to 13 percentage points higher efficiency than the global average. That means 26 per cent less CO2 per megawatt-hour of energy produced. Plants like Ostrołęka C are also fitted with modern emission control systems which bring the local emissions like particulates, sulfur or nitrogen oxides to levels on par with modern gas plants and below the most stringent regulations.
Let’s face it, even in developed economies coal will continue to play a vital role to keep the lights on. In the US today coal represents almost 30 per cent of electricity production, in Germany, my home country, nearly 35 per cent and even if the government has just announced a plan to move away from coal, the reality is that this plan will take decades to implement. So, back to my original question. Does it make sense to build a new coal power plant today? If countries need it and do it responsibly, my answer is a resounding “Yes.”
On January 15th the ultra-supercritical (USC) power plant Opole was connected to the grid for the first time – a milestone also called “first synchronization”. In other words: it means that Opole Unit 5 is now delivering power to the grid. Once fully completed, Opole 5 & 6 will deliver 1.8 GW to the Polish grid. It will provide 8 % current domestic demand for electricity and will be the third largest Polish power plant.

GE is supplying its efficient USC technology, including boiler islands, the turbine islands, air quality control systems as well as balance of plant.

The USC and advanced steam turbine technology at Opole is the same as that driving the world’s most efficient coal-fired steam power plant in Germany’s RDK8 facility.
The use of ultra-supercritical technology will enable the Opole plant owner PGE to reduce its environmental impact and meet regulatory requirements. This is particularly important in Poland, where around 84 % of fuel for electricity generation is coal or lignite.
Key components of the plant, like steam turbines and generators, were designed and manufactured at GE’s factories in Elblag and Wroclaw. With GE localization strategy, the Polish content of the overall Opole project reaches 70 %.
By the way, the order for the latest USC coal plant in Poland – Ostroleka C – was also placed with GE. When the 6 billion zloty (approximately $1.5 billion) Ostroleka C plant comes online in 2023, it will deliver 1,000 MW.
It will also use USC equipment that will boost the plant’s efficiency by more than a third compared to the average coal plant, from 33 to also 46 %. It allows the plant to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 26 % MW generated, compared to the global average.
Coming back to Opole … GE is responsible for the overall project management and general design of the whole EPC (Engineering – Procurement – Construction) project as well as delivery of technology for both units as well as commissioning and supports the consortium members – Polimex-Mostostal, Rafako and Mostostal Warszawa - in their scope of work ..
Despite the magnitude and complexity of the project, synchronization of Unit 5 is the proof that GE teams and consortium partners are hardworking and delivering.
