Ooh, I feel you. I hate buying one random book in a series. But lately I’ve ended up doing so anyway. You can always buy the first later if you decide you want to, you know?

Me too! yep, but I think my main issue is if Shadow and Bone it's a little bit hard to read, because if that's the case I'll wait for someone to translate it in spanish :/ but if not, I think I'll buy The Elite and S&B, and I'll buy The Selection later.

I've always maintained that Adam Mitchell, short-lived companion of the Ninth Doctor, was treated rather poorly by our Time Lord hero. Adam wanders off, explores future technologies, and risks damaging the timeline by bringing some of that technology back to his own time. All of that, I would argue, is exactly the sort of thing that the Doctor and his other companions do all the time on this show. But the fandom always denounces Adam for it -- when they remember him at all -- and I think that's just because the Doctor denounces him too.

A really interesting question, I think, is to ask why the Doctor treated Adam the way that he did. (Even if you think he was completely right to kick Adam out of the TARDIS, surely you have to admit that abandoning him with a hole in his head that opens whenever anybody snaps their fingers nearby is both a dick move and the exact behavior of giving advanced technology to early 21st century earth that the Doctor yelled at Adam for. There is no way that that kid didn't end up in a government lab somewhere soon after someone discovered his secret.) That's a pretty brutal way of dealing with a companion who disappointed you on his first time out.

So, why is the Doctor so harsh to Adam? Why does he punish him for behaviors that the Doctor indulges in himself and later seems to enjoy seeing in his companions?

The answer to that, I think, probably stems from the fact that Nine is still fresh from the Time War at this point. That whole first season of the rebooted show, the Doctor is raw and caustic to nearly everyone he meets. He shuts people out without giving them a chance, and it takes quite a while for those walls to come down. Nine is fragile and volatile when we meet him, and he lashes out at anyone who crosses him. By the time Adam enters the scene he's started to trust Rose, and she eventually softens him up even more, but at this stage, the Doctor is still too angry all the time to think clearly about some things.

THAT, I think is why Adam's punishment is so disproportionate to his supposed offense. The Doctor has just effectively slaughtered his own species and their mortal enemies... and in the episode where he first meets Adam, he's seen that not all of the Daleks are gone after all. This is not an individual who is able to react unemotionally when things don't go his way. If Adam hadn't made for such an easy target, it's all too likely that Rose would have been the one he considered not worth bringing along any longer.

I like to think that, in time, as the wounds from the Time War had faded somewhat, the Doctor returned to Adam Mitchell... perhaps soon after he dropped him off, before anyone could discover his implant. I like to think that he apologized and at the very least took Adam to get the thing removed, if not let him actually join the TARDIS crew for a while. I'm sure we'll never see that happen on screen, and since it's been more than six seasons without a mention now, I doubt we'll ever even hear Adam's name again. But it would be nice if the fans that remember this character would put just a little more thought into what the Doctor was going through at the time, and not just write him off because the main character did.
