OK y'all, just saw Out of Darkness in theatres with Kit Young, and it was really fun. It's out now in the US, coming out February 23 in the UK. Compared to the flashy comic book movies and blockbusters, this was a really nice change of pace. I don't know if I would call it traditional "horror", maybe more survival thriller/suspense? It was a little gory in parts, didn't really have a lot of jump scares - so if you don't normally do horror, you might be able to handle this film. It was brutal, realistic, and raw. All in all, a fun way to spend 90 minutes on a Sunday afternoon.
The language created for the film, Tola, was believable and the actors spoke it really fluently. It was easy to forget this was a made up language!
The acting was solid all around. I thought the story was interesting too and while I didn't like all the characters as people, I empathize and understood their motivations - which made them great characters.
The sound work and music were really great and added a tremendous amount to the suspense and atmosphere. Seeing it in the theatre meant we were treated to the full surround sound speaker experience.
Kit's character Geirr was so different from his other roles and he does a fantastic job; my husband was the one who noted this so it's not just me fangirling. You can see his range and potential; I really hope he continues to get meaty roles to really showcase his talents. (But also, more Jesper Fahey please.)
