Several civilians killed in air raid on Taliban

Local authorities have reportedly killed many people in Afghanistan, including civilians and the radical Islamic Taliban, in an air attack by the Afghan army.

Ali Ahmad Fakir Yar, the governor of Andraskan province in Afghanistan's eastern Herat province, said at least eight civilians were among the dead. A spokesman for the US military said it had not participated in airstrikes.

"So far 45 people have been killed in airstrikes by security forces in the Ham Ziarat area, including the Taliban," he said. At least 50 people were killed in an airstrike, a news agency reported, citing an eyewitness.

"A Taliban commander, Kari Gulam Nabi, had just been released from Pul-e-Charkhi prison. His friends had gathered to greet him and an airstrike killed at least 50 people," said an eyewitness. According to Mohammad Rafik Serzai, a spokesman for the Herat hospital, where five victims of the bombing are being treated, the incident happened in the morning.

There are at least eight civilians among the 45 killed in airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday. In addition to the eight civilians killed, it is unclear how many of the other 37 victims were civilians and how many were militants.

In another incident, several people were killed by a landmine near a road, according to security services. Eight civilians, including women and children, were killed and 12 others were injured in the blast, according to the Taliban.

The spokesman says there were two airstrikes. This is confirmed by two local officials. It was not immediately possible to get a comment from the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

The US special envoy for reconciliation in Afghanistan condemned the attack. "In Herat, photos and eyewitness accounts suggest that many civilians, including children, are victims of an Afghan airstrike," Zalmay Khalilzad wrote on Twitter that night on Thursday.

Khalilzad, who also negotiated the US-Taliban agreement in late February, again complained about the high level of violence in the conflict-ridden country.

An airstrike in Herat province killed several civilians and Taliban on Wednesday when they greeted a newly released Taliban leader. According to provincial politicians, at least eight people died in the Taliban-controlled district, and one child was allegedly killed in a car by a booby trap on the way.

Dozens of fatalities, as reported by some Afghan media, were initially not confirmed. Afghanistan's independent human rights commission spoke of "worrying reports".

For weeks, the Afghan government and international actors have been pushing for the planned intra-Afghan peace talks to begin to end the conflict with the Taliban.

U.S. forces in Afghanistan say they have not participated in the airstrikes on Wednesday. The United States is slowing down its presence in the country. It comes after the United States and the Taliban reached an agreement that would pave the way for peace talks between the militant group and the Afghan government.

But disagreement over the release of prisoners, which is one of the Taliban's demands, as well as a deteriorating security situation in the country, has meant that the peace process has been sidelined.

The United States signed an agreement with the Taliban on February 29 in Doha. It provides for the withdrawal of international troops and an exchange of prisoners as a confidence-building measure and is intended to pave the way for peace talks within Afghanistan.

The Kabul government had not been involved because the Taliban had previously refused to speak directly to it.
