Holly Blue Agate
Today on Stuff You Might Have Missed
I’ve heard a lot of very complicated theories on why Holly Blue Agate doesn’t appear to understand Steven.
Some folks seem to take this literally--interpreting this scene and others like it as evidence that Gems actually can’t understand humans without training or translation. I’ve seen all kinds of analysis to explain why she can’t understand him even though Sapphire speaks identically and is understood--everything from theories that “our” Gems can understand human languages because of being on Earth for a long time to ideas about Gems’ age (Era 1 vs. Era 2) determining whether they have this ability.
None of these theories make sense given the info we have about Peridot. Peri didn’t even know what humans look like when she first talked to Steven in “Marble Madness,” and she as an Era 2 Gem with no time spent on Earth could converse with him without difficulty.
Edit: Also, I don’t think it was specifically stated but I think they implied pretty strongly that Holly Blue is an Era 1 Gem anyway.
In context, the writing already does a good job implying that this is a joke--that we’re supposed to find it absurd that Holly mysteriously can’t interpret the “noises” of a captive human even though she understands Gems who use the same words.
However, there’s also this:
Holly Blue consistently uses this “I can’t understand you” tactic to undermine other characters she sees as inferior. Claiming someone isn’t speaking clearly or that they struggle with language is a common tactic of making them feel like they are beneath you or aren’t rising to your standards. For a human, she repeatedly makes it clear that she doesn’t even consider their barking to be language, and for the Amethysts she implies they need to put forth effort and discipline to have the honor of being listened to by her.
She can understand fine. She’s just a jerk.
Is this really gonna work?
No
Sapphire! You can't even sell it to your companions!
