"When a Gem is made, it's for a reason. They burst out of the ground already knowing what they're supposed to be, and then... that's what they are. Forever. But you, you're supposed to change. You're never the same even moment to moment -- you're allowed and expected to invent who you are. What an incredible power -- the ability to "grow up." "
Before I knew the extent of Rose Quartz and who she was, I actually did enjoy her as a character. In a sense, I still do due to the complexities that make her a great character at her core, good or bad, but oof, yknow?
In any sense, it's always fun to draw her and her motifs.
does anything else in SU compare for pure horror than our first encounter with the forced fused shard and their glitchy, screaming, nightmare forming process? i think not.
If Rose Quartz isn’t Lion, then y’all have to explain how he knew to do this, and how he’s able to manifest it coming out of his head. Not his mane, his head. He’s literally SUMMONING HIS SWORD the way gems summon their gem weapons.
Rose is Lion somehow, I guarantee it.
Probably the most depressing follow up yet to this post in particular:

But I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t somewhat enjoy drawing/ writing very sad shit in general (my own original stories have just as much angst as this, if not, WORSE. just saying)
Poor Spinel isn’t allowed to destroy the corrupted gem that shattered Pink Pearl, cause you know...
We don’t shatter gems.

PLEASE forgive me for breaking your hearts like this, but I was simply very pleased with how these came out (these were drawn a while back,
Why the episode "Secret team" it's more that important than it seems.
Watching "Secret team" the first time it may look like just a cute filler episode, right?
Well, after rewatching, i think there are actually some details that worth of analyzing and talking about.
1) The main theme of the episode:
The whole episode it's about "hiding secrets", it may seem irrelevant but it introduces one of the most important themes in the series: that it's about how some characters hide secrets from others. For example: Rose was a very mysterious character that Steven knows very little about in the first season, in later seasons Steven begins to learn how her mother hid tons of things from the Crystal gems.
The gems also hide many things about Homeworld to protect Steven from harsh truths like the gem war or the Beta kindergarten.
There's also this line from Garnet:
"Steven, I know you wanted to help them. You wanted to protect them, even from me. They made you feel like you had to take their side."
This episode foreshadows this theme of "hiding secrets to protect those you care about because you want to protect them".
2) Character development for Amethyst and Pearl
While this is one of the easiest to pick up, it's quite important since in this episode we see that Amethyst and Pearl can actually work together and get along.
They used to argue and fight a lot at the start of the series. In "Secret team" shows they can be nice to each other.
Even in the episode they seemed like they were having fun working together.
And Steven was really happy to see that.
That's why he wanted to make the secret team in first please and later asked them to make it again.
He wanted Pearl and Amethyst to get along and be friends.
Steven admits this when the giants gem hands (who is Garnet) start attacking them.
"We should've told Garnet! We should've told her right away! I knew Secret Team was wrong! I just— I wanted to see you guys acting like friends!"
This is also a good example of Steven trying to help and fix everyone. In this case: Pearl and Amethyst.
3) Cluster and gem experiments foreshadowing.
In "Secret team" the protagonists have to hunt down gem shards in the temple.
We see how they appear to be semi-conscious, yet they still remain as "mindless" gem shards who barely remember who they used to be.
Their forms resemble mostly arms, legs and feet. They can't regenerate completely, so they tried looking for their missing fragments.
It reintroduces and explores a concept that becames important later in the series.
In conclusion: While it may look like a filler episode, on a deeper analysis "Secret team" has a few interesting details and explores concepts that become important in the plot.
It's interesting that Yellow has similar powers to Pink. However, they're not completely healed, they still have cracks. I wonder if she can heal them further or if she would need Steven to heal them completely?
I’m probably late to the party on this but today I saw a post somewhere pointing out the bubbled gems in snow day right here:
And when I saw this I was like YIKES
Then I remembered that episode where the show turned into a horror movie for a few minutes
So like. The gems they still have bubbled are probably just those fused gem shard creatures right? I know they look like normal gems from a distance but there’s NO WAY they would be keeping any normal gems bubbled this is the only explanation I can think of besides those just not being gems at all
