Our Song Season 2 (Week 5) Impressions So Far

-So, none of the performances have really stood out to me yet? I mean, everyone’s great, but there aren’t many iconic or memorable performances that I’m inclined to go back to watch. For me, the only memorable performances were the duets between Coco Lee and GEM. I was only vaguely familiar with GEM, but I’ve never actually heard her sing because I thought she was just another HK popstar. But after hearing her perform I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You with Coco, GEM absolutely slayed. And then 刀马旦? Ugh. Perfection.

But now GEM has apparently pulled out of the competition, though it’s still not clear whether only temporarily or permanently. So now the only pair that I was looking forward to watching is now gone. I know Xiao Gui is trying really hard to fill GEM’s shoes, but his chemistry with Coco isn’t the same. (On the other hand, Jordan Chan and GAI’s pairing is growing on me).

-Zheng Yunlong hasn’t impressed me yet (although 橄榄树 with Chang Shilei came close, and I’m still waiting on A Million Dreams to grow on me), which is disappointing because my biggest motivator for watching season 2 was to watch him perform. I was really looking forward to his performances, but it feels like he’s holding back. I feel like he was able to really let loose on Super Vocal, but I haven’t seen that yet here (although I do appreciate how he’s trying out different singing styles than what we’re used to seeing from him). His cantonese pronunciation was also hella cringe but endearing. (side note: I also prefer him with a side part more than a middle part, but that’s besides the point). Really makes me appreciate Zhou Shen’s polylingual abilities more (you can barely detect an accent when he sings in cantonese, it’s stunning).

-This season feels messier than the first, although it could be argued that this season is more fun and energetic because of that. But I like how minimal and low-key last season was. I felt like it really focused on the singing and the coalescing of different generational styles. This season feels much more focused on theatrics. I remember how in a backstage interview Zheng Yunlong jokingly complained why Jordan Chan and GAI got better stage props than they did, and the interviewer/director(?) said that they still got more than Zhou Shen and Li keqin last season, who only had dry ice as a special effect. I remember last season, Wakin Chau and Jiang Yi Qiao sang Yesterday with each only having a guitar. It was such a stripped down yet moving performance.

Zhang Bichen is great as always, but like Zheng Yunlong, not groundbreaking or impressive yet. Overall, everyone is great (obviously) but no barriers have been broken yet. It’s hard to find the same spark and chemistry that Zhou Shen and Li Keqin had, or what Fei yu ching had with Ayunga and Timmy Xu.

Guess I’ll have to see how the rest of the season pans out, but I’m skeptical. I mean, I’m still enjoying the season no doubt, and it’s fun watching everyone’s interactions and teasing each other, but after most performances in this season so far, I’m always tempted to go back to rewatch some of season 1′s performances just so that I can be wow’ed again. They don’t get old no matter how many times I go back to them.
