gemdev but the thing is is that devon always had financial security in mind when settling down and gemma's career was always going to be professorship. she makes enough to provide for herself, but not enough to comfortably support an entire family on her own. the reality is that, even if mark hadn't been in the picture, devon wouldn't have seriously considered her, even if gemma had been serious about her. AND if she had chosen gemma, devon would be dissatisfied with the life she didn't want for herself, either working or living frugally.

devon's materialism is one of the most interesting things about her. lets all stop sanding her rough edges down and incorporate this into how we talk about her character.
