Steven Universe Theory...
(Note: based/inspired by 1 The fact that in HP the muggle Prime Minister knows about wizardry, 2 in Doctor Who the twelfth doctor was occasionally the official President of Earth, and 3 the theory I came across online that marriage equality happened much earlier in the SU universe due to Garnet’s influence)
Why is there so much nonchalance by just about everyone about the fact that extra-terrestrials exist and live on Earth? Specifically governments and of course the US government?
So perhaps the governments of the world do know about gems, but generally keep it arcane from the public. Perhaps each American President has been informed about it before coming to power. Garnet is probably the Crystal Gem they personally have interactions with. Even better (or worse, from a democracy point of view) maybe Garnet herself is secretly the real president of America. The official one (in this universe, it isn’t D.J.T.) is sort of a representative? Or more likely, Garnet merely tells the President not to let a particular law go through if it would damage the gems on Earth.
Footnotes:
a) I know Steven was basically an ambassador between Earth and Gemkind, so maybe he is involved too?
b) Garnet being an unofficial dictator of America wouldn’t be much worse than in our universe, as here America isn’t a democracy.
c) Also I headcanon that minor microbial life was discovered on Mars by humanity, sometime in the 20th century.
in order for gems to be created, they need life essence to suck out of a planet. that means that in order for gems to even still be made on homeworld, there is still some semblance of life there, and that once it was a planet with a thriving ecosystem. homeworld still has a breathable atmosphere for a reason, after all.
Homeworld
Can we take a moment to appreciate how SU is portraying authoritarianism?
This scene right here is such a big example of how controlling societies operate and view their citizens. Look at how choreographed everyone is on homeworld and how fake and repetitive their interactions and expression of emotions are.
In this scene the way this gems express their emotions when they adress their leader is so mechanical and almost forced. Which is very typical in real life in places like North Korea which are very controlling.
Even dancing which is a huge medium for self expression ,is completely regid, cold and extremely synchronized as in homeworld the individual is irrelevant. That is also evident by the gems being litteral cogs that fit perfectly with their partners and moving in a machine like manner.
Again many similarities to the real world in some places.
LISTEN ALL OF MY FOLLOWERS ARE PORN BOTS SO SU FANS PROBABLY WON’T SEE THIS BUT
Here's my theory on Legs From Here to Homeworld:
White Diamond represents God, Homeworld, and life itself.
White Diamond is the gem counterpart of God. Gems are created from the ground by other gems. As far as we know, this includes Diamonds. Whether Diamonds come from the ground, we know that they are created by other gems. This is apparent through Pink's character. Because of her size, childlike behaviour, and youth in general, and her motherlike relationship with Blue Diamond, we can assume that she was created by the other Diamonds. According to this creationist Diamond hierarchy, we can assume that Yellow and Blue were created by White because White is larger and more powerful than they are. Who created White? White was born in a star. We know that diamonds can form inside of carbon heavy stars such as, ahem, WHITE dwarves (or supernovae). In addition, White's design is star-based. Her hair is in the shape of a star, her cape is made of stars, and her skin is radiant like a star. So if White was created by nobody, but White herself created gemkind, then White is gemkind's divine creator.
Like White Diamond, Homeworld is white and radiant. What other features do White and her planet share? Both are damaged. How so? Examine White's eyes. White's eyes are the most relevant motif for this arc. They were featured in the promo. Why did the promo only show her eyes? Why not her whole face? Because White Diamond is blind. Unlike other gems, White's pupils are a stark white. Now, this may be attributed to the fact that she her whole being is radiant and white, but examine her eyes as a whole; they don't move. Both in the promo and when White meets Steven, her eyes remain eerily stagnant. In addition, it is clear that White's Pearl mirrors her as her Pearl seems to be locked into the same standing position. Like White, her Pearl's face has also been damaged. White was likely damaged when she, Yellow, and Blue blasted Earth in an attempt to defeat the Crystal Gems. However, Rose Quartz whipped her shield out at the last second. The blast probably reflected off of her shield, and because White stood between Yellow and Blue, the blast probably hit her square in the face, blinding her. If White Diamond is the embodiment of Homeworld, then Homeworld would also have been damaged by this blast when she was injured. To be fair, I'll play devil's advocate for a second. White's eyes may be white simply because she is White Diamond. Maybe her eyes don't move as to make her unsettling. Nevertheless, Homeworld is still dependent upon White Diamond's presence. This is evident in her radiance. Earlier in the episode, we observe both Yellow and Blue using their powers. Upon doing so, they each emit light: Yellow produces sparkles, and Blue's hand glows. Now, White's entire body is glowing. This suggests that she is using a gargantuan amount of power, but what on? The answer is in her stance. We can't see White's hands, but we can see her Pearl's hands, and since her Pearl is mirroring her we can assume that their hands are posed the same. By this logic, White's hands are posed as if she is holding something. So, Homeworld is white and radiant like White Diamond, Homeworld is damaged, White appears to be using her powers, and White appears to be "holding" something. White Diamond is holding Homeworld together.
From all of this we can gather that White Diamond represents life itself. White represents God because she is the creator of gemkind and she gave gems life. White represents the stars, upon which gemkind is dependent as they are composed of starlight. White represents Homeworld because she either A) has a psychic connection to it which causes it to share with her any injuries with which she is afflicted, or B) is at least the only thing keeping it from blowing up, meaning that gemkind depends on her for life.
But why is this information important? Like ya, White Diamond is God anybody could've guess that.
This is important because if White Diamond represents life, then White Diamond cannot be killed. Actually, it's more extreme than that, so let me rephrase; the Crystal Gems cannot do so much as kick White Diamond in the fucking shins. If White were to fall on her ass, the entirety of gemkind would be obliterated (excluding Bismuth, Peridot, Lapis, and any stray Rubies floating in space). This means that White holds absolute power over gemkind. She isn't just oppressive because she's big, angry, and scary. She's oppressive because if you rebel against her, you and your people will be obliterated against your will, against her will, and without question. The entire purpose of the Crystal Gems is to rebel against the Diamonds and end their oppression, but the Crystal Gems CAN'T do that. They can't shatter White. They can't bubble her. They can't touch her.
So what if they didn't attack her?
What if they healed her?
White Diamond is okay? What's going on? We thought you okay with the new way of rule by Steven's.
Are you sure? Cause White aren't look okay in here.
Okay. We understand. White might begun to understand why the new way of rule by Steven's were not great. White need to continue on the colonized the colony to continue their gemkind. Also the diamonds cannot stay do nothing and that is their actual purpose. Homeworld might became more unhappy and mad at Steven's doing around on Homeworld.
My thoughts
Ok, I have never had the chance to post my opinion on the show and especially on homeworld so here goes nothing (btw, sorry if I make mistakes, English is not my first language).
The Diamonds
Ok, so the diamonds are ruthless dictators and I'm glad that Steven at least acknowledged it. I know that Steven is compromising to convince them to heal corruption on Earth but I wish they made him a little more uncomfortable when he's interacting with them. The fact that they are friendly to him now , doesn't mean that we should forget that they're basically space Hitler! They have tortured and shattered millions of gems, they have created forced fusions ,they are the supreme leaders of a totalitarian oppressive regime that views it's cityzens like objects both metaphorically and from the looks of «Familiar» , it's meant literally as well...
White Diamond
Ok then,White Diamond, the top of the diamond authority,a litteral Godess of light. We don't know much about her, she seems like a person that is hiding their emotions and has replaced them with being emotionless and operating based on fanctionality and purpose. At the beginning I honestly thought that WD was just that by nature, just an all powerful space entity that doesn't have any need for sentiments, but after "familiar" I realized that she used to have fun with the other diamonds and participate in homeworld's activities. I think that WD even if she doesn't show it, suffered the most from PD's "shattering" and the beginning of Era 2 , which made her this emotionless , intimidating , isolated figure. Which is why Steven who is so empathic, will find negotiations with her so difficult.
Yellow Diamond
Yellow Diamond, our Patti Lupone voiced diva space dictator, is of the mentality punch first and ask questions later. Even though she seems like the most violent and strict of the diamonds I believe that it is all a facade to assert her dominance as a dictator. In some ways she is similar to White on the fact that she operates on fanctionality, utility and suppresses her emotions to a lesser extent. I think though that she'll be more willing to cooperate with Steven than Blue , seeing that she is more adaptable to change . We can come to that conclusion from the fact that she uses the Era 2 Diamond insignia on her structures, thus I think she'll be more willing to understand that Steven isn't Pink.
I also think that YD is actually quite emotional as she is yearning for Whites attention and is jealous that Steven got to interact with her.
Blue Diamond
Blue Diamond is the litteral manifestation of sadness. This giant blueberry is more than she seems. She is the most emotional and dramatic of all the diamonds and gives the illusion that she is a little "nicer" ,but I think she is more strict, oppressive and conservative than Yellow. She just wants things to stay the same forever. She doesn't move on easily and she is more rough than she seems , the way she treated Ruby and Sapphire in the past, the way she switched from sad to intimidating in "that will be all" when she faced Sapphire .
Of course she can be a softy but only when it comes to Pink.
Pink Diamond
Ah there she is, Pink Diamond. The environmentalist, party , juggler diamond. Who's basically the other diamonds's kid. Pink Diamond has the "all life is precious" way of thinking. She might be cute and the most oppressed Diamond but to be blunt she is the most immature, selfish gem in existence. You might say she was a person that was made to be a dictator (kinda like in the real world where the kids of dictators are the next in line to rule) and she chose to abandon her position because she believed in freedom for her people. But no, everything Pink Diamond did is selfish and immature, and I'll explain why, so bare with me. Pink Diamond had every chance to assert her dominance and use her power as a diamond to stand her ground against the other 3 ,she had the exact same status as the others but she was so immature and childish that she allowed the other diamonds to treat her like a baby. She could literally stand her ground or even go to war with her court against the other courts demanding freedom for Gems. Which would be much more effective, (a diamond fighting her family to free her fellow gems) but no, instead she began a war against her self that resulted in milions of deaths on both sides and when she was tired and burdened by her actions she faked her death, mentally imprisoned her most loyal companion,Pearl , silencing her ,by faking her death she drove the other diamonds to unleash corruption on the planet she so loved ,condemning thousands of gems to a fate worse than shattering and then she altogether disappeared creating a new being who has do deal with all the problems she left behind. Maaann and we call WD scary. Not to say that she did it on purpose, but that doesn't even matter it doesn't change the outcome of her actions.
Homeworld
Homeworld is a very interesting society. It is a combination of Nazi Germany and North Korea ,so basically it's hell. Gemkind is literally governed by a totalitarian regime composed of 3 immortal all powerful dictators. In this purpose driven society, beings are literally created to have a specific non changing existence for all of eternity. Any flaw or deviation is met with emediate shattering. The diamonds are portrayed as litteral Gods that are absolutely flawless. They are so bad that they use living being as inanimate objects
Even Rebecca Sugar said ,that we should look for Nazi Germany references on homeworld. They are literally everywhere from the special salute ,to the belief in genetic purity, to the shattering for imperfection or fusion, but I think there are references to far left societies as well, like north Korea, where the collective is more important, where the individual is irrelevant, where the leaders are portrayed like Gods and art is used for propaganda and where any sign of anyone questioning the leadership is met with extreme retribution.
Anyway, that is my view on the show and more specifically the diamonds and homeworld, it's my first analysis ever ,so sorry if it's bad . Tell me if you would like me to post my opinion on other characters of the show as well .
Have a good one fellow earthlings♥️
I do hope we find out what Lapis did to warrant her being punished by having her body destroyed, and then her gem fused with a mirror, with no intention of releasing her from her prison for over 5,000 years until Steven came along.
What did Lapis do that was so bad to receive a punishment on that scale?
Gemkind sure is harsh.
