Queen’s Thief Appreciation, Day 1: The Thief - My Thief, My Queen
Every Queen’s Thief book begins with its protagonist at a low point, in most cases fleeing (or trying to flee) for their life. Everyone feels doomed and mistaken, and then things get better. But when Eden (of the Geninsula) pointed out the similarities between the final scenes of The Queen of Attolia and Thick as Thieves, I started to understand how much all of the endings have in common, too.
Every book ends with characters understanding and affirming what they mean to each other. Here, in the snatch of dialogue after the text of The Thief, and after he has given her Hamiathes’s Gift to affirm her as Eddis (saving himself, even if he doesn’t know it), Helen and Gen exchange a “Thief” and a “my Queen.” The titles are traditional and political, but they hold all the love, loyalty, and closeness of their relationship, a relationship in which they are both so secure, that changes but lasts through the end of the series. And if we’re talking about titles and names, these books are called The Queen’s Thief. 😭
So come follow me through the end scenes, which are happier than the beginning scenes! The art quality will be “she looks a little too tall, and I didn’t take the time to fix it” but also “I like it, and I had fun.” Happy qt appreciation time!
