Panda and Pandoo: encountering society’s gender conditioning and shutting it down, one 5 year old at a time

For safety reasons, I don’t want to use my daughter’s real name - so I’ll call her Pandoo instead.

I was really disappointed to hear my preferred stylist tell my daughter that she shouldn't get a mohawk. I mean, we're at a salon where we pay to have our hair cut and styled the way we want it, and this woman looks at us with this disgusted face and says "Pandoo! No!" Like, right to her face. Pandoo looked HEARTBROKEN.

We left. I was pissed. We got into the car and I just sat there, seething. I had the choice of just driving away or going back in - so I unbuckled Pandoo’s carseat and said “Come on. There’s something I want you to know,” and brought her back into the salon with me.

I brought Pandoo in with me and pulled her hood away from her face so Chrissy (the stylist) could see her face. I told Chrissy that what she said was hurtful. I told her that Pandoo had been talking about this for weeks, and in a matter of seconds, she managed to break my daughter's heart.

She apologized for "hurting her feelings," but I pushed it. I told her that it was more than just hurting her feelings, it was telling her that she needs to adhere to society's gender standards -- or else you'll get looks of disgust like the one she gave us when she found out what Pandoo wanted. She said "I just look at her like a little doll, I don't see her that way," which I snapped back at with "But she's not a doll, I don't get to play dress up on her - she owns herself and her body and she decides how she wants it to look, not me and not you."

She was laughing through the whole thing. It was hard to take her seriously when she's just trying to keep things light-hearted by chuckling through her apologies.

I made sure to tell her that up until that point, I was really happy to go there and I have a lot of loyalty for the places I enjoy going to - but I probably wouldn't be coming back.

THIS is why gender conditioning is fucking toxic. This woman slashed my 5 year old's hopes because what she wants isn't "typical" for a girl.

If you’re the kind of person that thinks girls can’t have mohawks or boys can’t wear dresses, get the fuck out of my face because I don’t want to share your air.
