Is it me or do unnecessarily gendered products piss me off?
Because the boys McDonalds happy meals always had by far the better toys
Because I'd either have to put up with fucking judgemental looks when I'd ask for the 'boys' one
or be green with envy whilst watching my brother get it without him even having to breath a word
Because a toy car isn't necessarily a fucking boys toy
Because me building lego or playing scalextric made me a 'tomboy'
Because my parents still don't remember which I prefer
Because the boys toys were always more active, practical and educational like 'build your own...' sets
Because even kids kits for looking at wildlife and bugs were advertised for boys
Because I wasn't given a choice when my room was painted fucking pink, nor was my brother when his was blue
Because today girls are still being told to be pretty princesses and boys are told they have to be able to build stuff or race cars
Because why can't kids today allowed to be who they want? Without any of these fucking gender normative expectations, why can't the daughter ask for a cricket bat for christmas and the son ask for a doll without being judged. Why can't kids, these days, live life without people, even their parents, making assumptions on what they ought to like and dislike just because of their sex? And then they're either judged or ignored when they try to express their own opinions that don't conform to these norms?
Because why doesn't society see that here is more than just boys and girls, blue and pink, toy swords and hello kitty.
There are shades of grey, in betweens, bits of this and bits of that, and you know what? It's this that makes each and every kid unique and human, it's this diversity of likes and dislikes in one individual that makes them who they are, for it is this that makes them our children.
So why not embrace it? Take it for everything that it is and more, let it expand and grow, let us share it.
Lets not put into boxes and label it, let it be free.
