Disco soul anthem for life, liberty and the pursuit of independence.

Known for popularizing the Philadelphia/sweet soul sound through artists like The O'Jays and Harold Melvin + The Blue Notes with mentors Kenneth Gamble + Leon Huff, Gene McFadden + John Whitehead eventually split away from their mentors' shadow to release their own music. Originally thought to be an empowering record representing the momentum of African Americans, the track is actually McFadden + Whitehead's independence record. "Ain't" is just as good as any of their other hits, if not better than some. The uptempo beat + upbeat lyrics create an eloquent disco expression of the duo's frustration at Gamble + Huff for wanting them to remain behind-the-scenes rather than in the spotlight. Though the success of this track was never matched by the duo, their signature song is a great anthem for both perseverence + revenge through success.
