✨When I was in my First year of med school I had to do a summer elective.
Some of the doctors in the clinic thought that first year was too early to be in a clinical setting and while I do agree to some extent, I’m glad I did that elective, because it turned out to be invaluable and was easily one of the best clinical experiences I’ve had.
🌳It was the foundation of how I felt doctors should treat patients (you will shadow some cranky doctors, we all do; however that is a deeper issue that I will talk about on another post).
👨🏻⚕️The GP I shadowed had the nicest demeanor with his patients. He was kind and listened to them and never demonized them for their habits that might have led them his way. He knew that health is complex and stigmatizing patients will keep them from seeking help.
He taught me a lot.
And I remember most of his advice.
📝I’ll share one with you:
“If you see a patient regularly (especially an elderly lady) write down in the corner of your notes something from her life she might have casually mentioned (eg. If she talks about her kids, her hobbies or her friends etc)
When you see her the next time ask her about it: “How are your children doing, How’s The garden looking?”
🔍This opens the patient up a little, they feel relaxed with you, it shows you care.
It benefits everyone, your patient will share information with you that might help diagnose something.
Everyone wins.

Dr. Mouna HN (MBBS, MD – Internal Medicine) provides medical evaluation and personalized care for respiratory and asthma-related concerns in Begur, Electronic City, Bangalore. Understanding Respiratory & Asthma Problems
Asthma is a common respiratory condition that can cause episodes of coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing. Symptoms may vary from person to person and can sometimes be triggered by allergens, dust, smoke, pollution, respiratory infections, weather changes, or physical activity.
Other respiratory concerns may include:
✓ Asthma and recurrent wheezing ✓ Chronic or persistent cough ✓ Breathing difficulty and shortness of breath ✓ Bronchitis and respiratory infections ✓ Respiratory allergies ✓ COPD-related respiratory symptoms ✓ Chest tightness associated with breathing problems ✓ Recurrent respiratory complaints
Why Respiratory Symptoms Need Proper Evaluation Respiratory symptoms can have several possible causes. A persistent cough, for example, may be associated with an infection, allergy, asthma, medication, smoking exposure, or another medical condition. Therefore, self-medication may not always address the underlying problem.
A medical consultation can help assess symptoms, medical history, possible triggers, and other relevant factors. Based on the clinical evaluation, the doctor may recommend appropriate investigations or treatment.
Asthma Evaluation and Management Asthma management focuses on understanding symptoms and possible triggers while following an individualized treatment plan. Regular medical follow-up can be helpful for monitoring symptoms and adjusting treatment when required.
Important aspects of asthma care may include:
✓ Understanding individual asthma triggers ✓ Monitoring recurring symptoms ✓ Following the prescribed treatment plan ✓ Learning appropriate inhaler techniques when inhalers are prescribed ✓ Avoiding known environmental triggers where possible ✓ Maintaining regular medical follow-up ✓ Seeking medical attention when symptoms become persistent or worsen Care for Chronic Cough and Breathing Difficulty A cough that continues for a prolonged period or keeps returning deserves medical attention. Similarly, unexplained breathlessness, wheezing, or chest tightness should be evaluated rather than routinely managed with over-the-counter medicines.
A detailed medical assessment can help determine whether symptoms may be related to asthma, allergies, infection, COPD, or another underlying condition.
Respiratory Infections and Bronchitis Respiratory infections can cause symptoms such as cough, fever, congestion, throat irritation, mucus production, and breathing discomfort. Some infections may resolve with supportive care, while others may require medical evaluation and specific treatment.
People with existing respiratory conditions may need additional attention when they develop an infection. Seeking timely medical advice can help determine the appropriate course of care.
Respiratory Allergies and Environmental Triggers Dust, smoke, air pollution, pollen, strong fragrances, and other environmental factors may trigger respiratory symptoms in some individuals. Identifying personal triggers can be an important part of managing recurring respiratory complaints.
Practical measures may include:
✓ Reducing exposure to known allergens ✓ Avoiding cigarette smoke and other irritants ✓ Maintaining good indoor ventilation ✓ Keeping living spaces reasonably clean and dust-free ✓ Following medical advice for allergy-related respiratory symptoms
COPD and Long-Term Respiratory Health Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a long-term respiratory condition that can cause persistent cough, mucus production, breathlessness, and reduced exercise tolerance. Early medical assessment and appropriate management can support better respiratory health.
Individuals with ongoing respiratory symptoms, particularly those with a history of smoking or significant environmental exposure, should discuss persistent symptoms with a qualified healthcare professional.
When Should You Consult a Doctor? Consider seeking medical evaluation if you experience:
✓ Persistent or recurring cough ✓ Frequent wheezing ✓ Breathlessness during routine activities ✓ Repeated respiratory infections ✓ Chest tightness or breathing discomfort ✓ Symptoms that repeatedly disturb sleep ✓ Respiratory symptoms triggered by dust, smoke, or allergens ✓ Increasing difficulty with usual physical activities
Severe or sudden breathing difficulty, blue/grey lips or face, confusion, or inability to speak normally because of breathlessness requires urgent medical attention. Personalized Respiratory Care by Dr. Mouna HN
