Binaural documentation from the installation “Der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne boote…” by artists Audun Eriksen and Arnfinn Killingtveit, shown at Gråmølna kunstmuseum in Trondheim as part of the Meta.morf biennale for art and technologi during May 2014, arranged by Trondheim Elektroniske Kunstsenter – TEKS. The project is a recycled art project utilizing around 60 old computers, previously running the obsolete windows XP OS, now installed with Linux. The computers are each running a Pure Data patch that gives them a form of crude sonic behaviour. By listening to the sounds in the room, the computers searches for sustained recognizable notes, and upon hearing them, replies with their own bootylicious sounds, based upon the tone and the time intervals of the percieved sounds. The screens also light up to illustrate when a computer is singing. The computers can thus be interacted with acoustically by the audience. They also just start to sing with eachother from time to time if left alone. Upon the completion of the project, computers will be donated to the public.

The recording was done with in-ear DIY binaural microphones and a Sony PCM-D50 sound recorder.

Generative Suite 1, Generative Tribe 1, Generative Caves 1, and Generative Journey 1:

These four songs were created by setting up different parameter sets in Noatikl, then running the software to generate MIDI events for each track. I wanted each of these songs to have a completely different feel, so I assigned a unique set of Native Instruments’ Kore and Kontakt soft-synths to each of the three MIDI channels in each piece. These songs are titled with a “1” at the end because, when you “play” a piece’s parameter set in Noatikl, the composition comes out different each time. I did run multiple “takes” of each of these songs (and they all sound like close cousins to each other) but I preferred the results of these initial attempts over all subsequent tries.

This song is featured on my February 2011 release, “Life Unsettling,” a CD of generative electronic music.

An etude on generative music with SuperCollider. All sounds and sequences produced from code using randomized synthesis only. No edits, effects or manipulations after the code was compiled.

The goal was to create a dynamic system that is different every time is played.

Output from a software patch i’m working on to make music out of user input. The input in this case is any number. All the patterns are generated from this number, there is no randomness used in the software, so if you enter the number twice you get the same output. These examples also use one source sample which i was changing throughout. Still lot’s I want to do with this, the melodic parts could do with a lot of work for example…

The aim of the project was to develop an automatic soundtrack system which reacts to a video clip. The system should extract relevant information from video footage edited by the group and, in real time, generate a musical composition that reinforces the emotional content of the sequence.

The main emotional stimulus in the video was identified as the development of colour. Therefore the system was designed to modify the soundtrack according to the intensity of different colours, their position in the video container and overall brightness/darkness balance.

The soundtrack is generative composition based around a chord sequence in C major which varies in sympathy with the video content through a combination of stochastic processes, fixed relationships and randomisation.

The system itself can be interpreted as having three intimately linked sub-systems:

Video analysis and data extraction utilising Max’s video extension, Jitter. Translation of extracted data into usable information which has some sort of musical meaning. Various methods of generating music in Max/MSP by synthesis/sampling and audio processing.
