This is a power plant — the Ravenswood Generating Station, to be exact. It is on the East River at the very western edge of Queens, though it can be seen from many spots in Manhattan as well, particularly Roosevelt Island, where I was standing when I took this photo. I think there is some beauty in its stark, industrial, almost foreboding appearance, especially in the red-and-white-striped smokestacks.
