I saw this post and I was thinking there could be much better way to split people into generations (based on how the world has changed between when they were born and now). Technology and views have changed so much in the past couple of years that I think the generations are actually getting much smaller, & I think views are changing so rapidly that the differences between people two years ago and people born this year could be the same as generation X and generation Y. So, from the perspective of someone born in 2000, this is what I think would be more accurate:
Generation X is the same (1960′s-1980′s, more specifically 1984-ish)
Generation Y is from around 1985-1995. Their generation experienced 9/11 and remember it well. They saw the rapid improvement of technology and the rise of computers & the internet.
Generation Z’s were born around 1996-2003. We grew up with the war on terror & we got so see the first black president elected. We saw the death of Nokia and the rise of the smart phone. We watched the internet grow from poor and awkward graphics to more elegant and modern.
Generation Blue’s of 2004-2010 (i don’t know what it’d be called but Generation Blue sounds cool) saw changes in music tastes with the births of so. many. bands. They got the “x v.s. y” where everyone is on 1 of 2 sides (cookies v.s. creme, creme v.s. cream, android v.s. apple, etc.). They had to suffer through the stock market crash of 2008, with the loss of thousands (millions across the world?) of jobs.
Generation Red’s of 2011-present day (not an official name but red is pretty much the opposite of blue) are growing up in a world where it’s so much more acceptable to not be straight/cis. The extensive racism of the police are a problem they’re going to grow up with (and hopefully like the others will end in less then 3-10 years). They’re probably going to be the most diverse generation so far, in terms of sexuality and gender.
That’s not to say that previous generations didn’t experience the events the ones ahead of them did.
What do you think? More accurate?
