When taking into account the full picture I don't think any one pronoun SHOULD be used as our default gender neutral... But out of all the options before "they" became commonplace, like generic he, generic she, alternating, stupid s/he stuff... It brings me so much joy to be reading a text and suddenly read "hir"
Like purely in my own personal corner I would love to just say "if someone was [X] hir experience would be..." just to use these wonderful uncommon pronouns on my hypothetical scenario fill in person. Heck Im not even called "he" often enough, never mind any cooler pronouns like ze or ey.
Past writers who made an attempt at a gender neutral pronoun, whether for legal documents or in a sci fi novel, I love y'all <3
