So I was curious what horseblr had to say regarding genetically editing equine genomes. With the recent advances with the CRISPR / CAS9 genome editing I wonder how long before it begins to impact the equestrian community. Would it be problematic to use those advances to correct the problems that exist due to poor breeding practices? What about optimizing conformation or hoof health? Desirable colors/patterns? Performance capabilities? (ex: Secratariat's extremely efficient cardiovascular system) Where does the line get drawn and who draws it? How do you maintain appropriate genetic variation in the breeding of horses? Do competitions bar genetically altered horses from participating? (How?) I'm not super versed on the limits of this technology but the articles I've read seem to indicate that we don't yet know what the limits will be. So I'm curious what people have to say on the topic. Especially is regard to horses, since they occupy an interesting place in our society...
