Ed helped Stede be what he wanted (a pirate) and Stede helped Ed be what he thought he couldn’t be (a loveable sack of meat) and when they got separated both of them didn’t fit in. Stede was too pirate-y for his hometown, Ed was too “soft” for Izzy (which symbolizes his whole pirate career, Izzy was the only one left there that could have an actual impact in his decisions).

our flag means death really filled a hole in gay content that I always wanted from our media, and not just in representation. it has truly given me something I craved all this time. so much gay content is either squeaky clean or grim and despairing, with not nearly enough in the middle. ofmd and blackbonnet are right there in that middle.

we get the mistakes and the hurting each other and the regressing and the fear and the bitter heartache and the anger that says i cannot be this broken i cannot be undone i must grind my broken heart into dust and ash and rage because i will not survive
