So I snagged my dude today before he left for London for research. He’s back home, and not leavin till the weekend, but I finally got a meeting between him and Dr Venn this morning! I need to acid etch pieces of low-grade Orthoceras fossils I cut last month. I’ll surround each piece with that clay we used for Museums, those will sit in glass trays; I’ll do my acid trials all on the same day. Testing two acids, acetic (1:10) and HCl (same protocol as Ropes 1982) to see what will etch better. Wish me luck, I start my trials on Saturday! 😬
Spring break won’t be much of a break, but I’ll have time to snowboard a few times at least. Before he left, he gave me the keys to the lab where the dermestids are soooo I’m the temporary Keeper of the Beetles! Ah well, at least I won’t forget to water my little pepper plants!!
Oh yeah, we planted 4 types of peppers in our first MPERS (Maps, Planning, Environment, & Rock Society) meeting a few weeks ago. They’re sprouting strong in B12 and they’re on track to being healthy plantos for our late-semester fundraiser!
While I was shown which geo lab has a hood and what materials I had there, Dr Venn asked me “now, do you add water to acid or acid to water?”
And everything all just hit me like “hhhhh” (the answer is acid to water btw, always add acid to water!!) Just all of a sudden like “holy shit ok ok I’m back on schedule now i’m gonna be doing chemistry and shit and i’m making a whole new method for this fossil wow now i have to DO the protocol i wrote and i need to do it right.” Like it just feels wild to do this type of lab stuff for the first time almost totally unstructured. I have the bare bones and I know what not to do, but other than that 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️!!!! It sounds like I’m totally unprepared but I’ve been documenting and annotating everything for weeks. :/
Let’s go do some science! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
