How effective were quarterstaffs in a battle/duel, and were they used in battlefields at any point?

Quarterstaffs were actually pretty effective self defense weapons, but a terrible weapon for the battlefield. I won't say they were never used on the battlefield, it probably happened at some point, but they were definitely never a primary thing (at least in medieval Europe,) and I've never seen accounts of them on the field.

A stick becomes exponentially more effective when you mount sharp steel to the end of it, but you can't take that places. No one will question you for having a nice stout walking stick, and if you happen to be set upon by vagrants and vagabonds, you have the reach advantage and can easily keep them away (unless they also have a quarterstaff.)
