Vineyard near Mount St. Bernard, from a painting by George Barnard
Frontispiece from: Mudie, Robert, 1777-1842. Autumn, or, The causes, appearances, and effects of the seasonal decay and decomposition of nature. London : T. Ward, 1837

Oh my. Here is something. It's a train of Hood's supplies that was destroyed, and presumably burned on the tracks. Train wheels are arrayed off into the distance. What stops them from entering the foreground is a white patch of earth that looks like sand at first. Then the bent track is noticed. Then the depression in the ground at that point. It must have been a tremendous explosion, although a small tree still stands near. #barnard #georgebarnard #photography #daguerreotype #dryplate #wetplate #civilwar #sherman #generalsherman #atlanta #confederacy #earlyphotography #art #artphotography #landscapephotography #war #hallmark #keithdavis
The photo on the left is of Atlanta. This serves as a reminder that so much time as passed, the meaning of photos can change dramatically. In the mid-1800 this must have appeared to contemporary viewers much differently than it does today. On the right is the Savanah river. Like the left hand shot, contemporary viewers would have seen these images differently as they would have known the significance in terms of Sherman's march of each landscape. Today, absent the title and historians essay we are unmoored from the photograph's intended context. #barnard #georgebarnard #photography #daguerreotype #dryplate #wetplate #civilwar #sherman #generalsherman #atlanta #confederacy #earlyphotography #art #artphotography #landscapephotography #war #hallmark #keithdavis
