Georges Gardet was an animalier sculptor who created regal and romantic depictions of wild animals. Here, a lioness is taken out of her natural surroundings and is approaching a foo dog, one of a pair of stone lions who would guard temples or imperial residences. Enhancing the exoticness is a chinoiserie-inspired colouring of rich reds and golds in the marble.
